Foam filling chassis

the only thing that is iffy about i think is the mess. and the fact that it stiffings up the cruple zones. please tell me ninja why you feel this way??

No reason in particular. Just don't see it making much of a difference. Are there any conclusive write-ups out there?

yeah there are... all of them came to the same conclusion and the one there on zilvia had real hard facts. long run, there is nothing. i couldnt tell you what would happen after a year of this but hey whatver.

I have not read the thread in the posted link by tonymac but filling empty cavities with foam or 2 part foaming epoxy is used in marine applications where it is used to stiffen the hull, stringers, gunwalls and to secure fuel tanks. The way it aids in adding renforcement to a boat hull is to provide extra backing for the hull against the deck tieing both of them together to work as one against the pounding ocean and supporting the deck from passengers.

I do not think this would be beneficial to a automotive chassis because all of the flex in a car is torsional, a different kind of flex compard to a boat. The foam would not have a large surface area to fill which would reduce its leverage (strength). (for comparisons sake) A boat on plane traveling in a strait heading against the waves will recieve equal pressure against the hull every time it meets the water after going airborn (ignore off camber transome landings with a following sea). In a car, each wheel picks up different altitudes in the road which exerts a twisting force. I think I read someone mentioning filling the frame and fender rails with foam, compare the volume of foam used in your instance and compare it to the volume and surface area of which would be in the hull of a boat. You will not be able to tie in enough points in your chassis and still allow the foam to be structural.

Id rather gusset in specific places. Becarefull you dont purchase a product that will hold moisture, rust.

have fun.

no its not running. but to be honest with all the other stuff that i have put or going to put on the car it will be hard to tell what would be the difference.

yeah i have read alot on the subject. the foam doesnt hold water since it is a closed cell foam. the other thing too which this foam helps alot in is the sound, it reduces alot of road noise which is right up my ally. it was proven to be stronger in that thread that tony linked. it wasnt some great big differance but it was noticable. in all the links that i found this was the case, they all said it made the ride smoother and the car was stiffer less flexing and alot less noise. i think that i will give it a try i just need to figure out the drains if any from the sun roof. i dont think that there are, but like i said i want to make sure.

haha yeah thats why you have a nick for... he is good at taking pics and shit... everyone needs a nick

you know i wonder where else i can put this in the car... im starting to think that it might help keep the heat and all the road noise out of the car... like in the rear quarter and stuff like that.... mmm the wheels are spinning in my head..

Yeah but nobody's tested torsional rigidity which is what rick's talking about and what's important in terms of chassis flex. I really don't trust people's opinions without conclusive data - too many times have I seen people think a part makes their car faster when its simply all in their heads b/c its what they want to believe. I'm sure it reduces road noise however and worth to apply/try if that's one of your goals as well. Good luck either way!

wow nice find piner... damn this is a great thread. the only other thing i was worried about was the foams life. but aparently it last a life time. so thats that.

nah i dont want to cage it. i was just looking for a little bit more stiffness and to make it a little more quieter.
