I'm thinking about this swap.....

that would be pointless tho.
from what i read really quickly is that they make a 5.3 aluminum but only ina FWD application and the bellhousing doesnt line up. and it was in a newer car.

id rather buy some old camaro or t/a or something and sell the shell after. oh well. thanks for the links jason!

5.3 is an ls based motor. You can swap 241's/243's on to them. Same thing goes for the LQ9 (iron block), you can swap the ls1/6 heads onto it also.

Transmissions too, t56, 4l603, 4l80e etc etc

Thats what I love about these motors, there are so many different combo's you can do to match your budget.

so they do make a alum 5.3 that isnt a pain to make rwd?

i dont know where your reading from but its wrong, what do you think GM trucks come with. They have either the 5.3 or 6.0 motors.

wikipedia lol

i know they come with that but do they make trucks that came with an aluminum 5.3? thats the deal breaker for me. i dont want some heavy ass iron block v8 in my car.

i dont think the 5.3 has a aluminum one no. and if you want another cheaper and heavy option, go LT1. heh.

Dont quote me on this but I believe there is like an 80-90 lb diff between the aluminum & iron motors.

seems correct from the search i just did.

They do make a 5.3 l aluminum block

chevy v8 > nissan v8 > Ford v8 > Chrysler v8 > b16 > 1uz

just my opinion of course

Yes trucks did come with an aluminum 5.3. For any other questions, go on ls1tech and search!

yes on the alum 5.3 but there expensive almost as much as a true ls1. 5.3 iron block it only weighs 80 lbs more still way less than rb swap remember that.

Main reason i love the ls setup is the ease to work on it any thing can be done in a couple hrs in the car. No timing belt no overhead cams, just easy. change cam in our cars in like 2-3hrs on an ls. Try to buy cams for a 1uz then install them then you cant tune shit. Without big money.

so poor teenage messican + iron 5.3 + clean coupe = sponsored dorifto action?

but seriously thanks for the answers fellas. im gonna start looking it all up.

one more thing. it would use the same mount kit and all that as an ls1 correct?

yup, since its an ls based block you can use an ls1 swap kit.

did some research.
LM7's are the iron block 5.3
they weigh around 490lbs and are everywhere and cost about 500-900 bucks depending on condition

LM4's are the aluminum block version and weigh about 420/430lbs
are a little more rare and are in more newer cars aka more expensive cause theyre all low miles

when you compare the ls1 that weighs around 430lbs but is 2 grand or more expensive per motor (if your looking at motors separate and not price of the car that you could sell) and puts out the same amount of power stock.

5.3's can use all the same shit and can use parts off the ls1(cheap performance parts) to make them more powerful

and if you compare the iron block 5.3 to an rb25 theyre off by about 20 lbs.

i learned some shit today WOOT WOOT!

pretty sure the trucks didnt get an alumn 5.3. The alumn 5.3 came in the SSR and FWD LS4 cars. And ls1s arent $6k. They are the same price as an sr swap. There is a swap for sale on TR for $2k. And from what ive heard with the 1uzfe you will be spending some serious coinage to get 400 hp outta them. 400 hp outta an ls1 is a cam and valve train swap away. Now Ls3s and ls7s, yea those are some serious money even used, but an LS3 is a cam/exhaust/tune away from 500rwhp, reliably.
