Maybe its your editing style but these shots are flat. It just looks like there is one light right in front of the person.

the black flags are souly for the background
they keep all unneeded light off the subject and on the background
i metered the subject for f.11 and the background for f.18
so that light coming from the softboxes would have messed with the already metered subject. and yes he was standing in the middle of the black flags.

also the black flags are used to keep the background even, so that there is no gradient from black-to-gray-to-white.
