Ok so Monday night i turn on my comp and it doesn't open My Documents, so i restart it and now it doesn't boot up. It just comes up to a blank desktop no mouse pointer, no icons, no taskbar, just that default wallpaper of a green hill and blue sky. Anyone know what this is or can fix it, and if not wheres the best place to take my comp and have it running again? (cheaply preferably lol) thanks! :bigthumbu

first off, what brand, OS, age details, secondly it sounds like sw issues, attempt to load safe mode to get back to OS and start a system restore, if you can't get to safe mode you are gonna have to reload windows. if its a Gateway/EmachinE or an Acer pc i can assist you i do tech support for them, if any other brand contact their tech support

Just buy a new one. They are cheap now a days.

I gotta move out my house asap, cant afford a new comp gotta fix this fucker  also i didnt back up my hardrive and the thought of losing all my music is really bothering me

No brand, it was built :( my dad bought it for my bday about a year ago so i dont know what company or guy he had build it. How do i load safe mode? and then do the system restore? thanks btw

if you are running a windows based OS. tap the F8 key when you first turn the computer on. it should bring to a listing that says "advanced boot options" choose Safe Mode using up and down and hit enter. IF it loads to the OS log in as normal and go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. choose the first option that allows you to return to a prior point. choose a day on the calender before the issues occurred 1-2 weeks ago and it should bring you back to before the issues persisted. if no success contact whoever built the computer and get a windows install disc to reinstall OS. i suppose your running XP if you running Vista its the same process just slight differences in wording. your HW seems fine if it was a HDD or RAM going bad you wouldn't have even gotten to your desktop before. any virus protection?

oh ok will do that today when i get home, and yes i have windows xp. The only protection i had was crap Avira, apparently it didn't do shit lol cause about 2 weeks before the comp crashed i started getting random popups, one for airline tickets and one that was like a fake computer virus scan, when i would have Avira on it would just tell me its detected a trojan or somesort and no matter what i tell it to do with it (delete, quarantine, etc.) it would keep popping up. but the computer still ran normal, i figured it was just some annoying adware...i was wrong uh? :( Also are you saying maybe my HDD and all my files may be ok? :)

if its a virus the sytem restore won't work. if its a Troojan your sorta fucked. you'd need to format the drive and hope its not in some hidden partition. your best bet is to find a copy of XP with product key. format the drive and reload OS. you files should be intact HW wise but virii could be bundled in whatever files you attempt to back up. i don't know why people use PCs anyway haha virii suck im on PS3 right now with no worrys of a virus hahah sucks though.

if your cpu went wack and it was acting really really slow you probably had a trojan. i use ad-aware and avast (all free versions get them at download.com) they work fine for me and ad-aware (anniversary edition) removes trojans and worms. idk how to help you with a desktop, i just know what happened to me when my laptop drowned, i was able to get my music and my photos and school work from my internal HD after i enclosed it in an exclosure to make it an external HD. you can try that but idk if you would be bringing the trojan or whatever you have into whatever else computer you are going to put the data on.

thats all i can help you with im not really a computer tech, i can just help you find free stuff :)

not a bad piece of advice, but your best bet is to see what exactly it is you got, although I'm 99% sure its malware related. If it is, clean it up if you can, and back up yo shit! Use an external HD for your data (photos, movies, docs, porn,etc...) and a portable if its a laptop. keep the internal HD for the OS and programs only. That way if your HD goes to shit or you have to reformat, all you loose is the programs and the OS, no data is touched.

thanks for all the advice so far guys!

Well i tried booting the comp last nite in safe mode, took me to a black screen that said "safe mode" at each of the corners of the the screen and windows service pack 2 at the top and thats it besides that i now had a mouse pointer. i guess i should just get the Windows CD and reinstall it now uh?

Alright guys, i got a hold of a boot disc and reinstalled windows, Im starting from scratch but it works again which im happy but need help with two minor things. 1 My sound doesnt work, how do i get my sound working again? do I need to download a driver? (i do have a sound card) and 2: when i scoll up and down a menu like in My Documents or right here on a web page its doesn't scroll smooth but like laggy...kinda annoying and it didnt do that before, thanks for the help so far btw guys!

ya, you need the sound driver, as well as any drivers that didn't come w/ the computer when you bought it.

the scroll thing seems to be some factory program that never runs right...see if theres a control panel and such for the mouse, might have options for disabling it.

glad you got it working though :bigthumbu
