PlayStation 3 may be delayed a year

Sony's next-generation PlayStation 3 video game console might not appear in key markets this year and could cost the company $900 per unit to produce initially, according to Merrill Lynch analysts quoted in the Financial Times on Sunday.

Sony has indicated a spring launch for its console in Japan and the industry is not expecting a North American launch until November, the FT said.

But Hitoshi Kuriyama of Merrill Lynch in Japan said there are reports that the PS3 could be delayed by between six and 12 months, meaning an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the United States, the FT said.

Merrill Lynch analysts in San Francisco have estimated that the initial bill of materials for PS3 could approach $900, falling to $320 by three years after launch, the FT said.

The implications are that Sony could have to take a substantial loss on the PS3 through subsidies or risk low sales at the higher price and hand the advantage to Microsoft to be first to market with its Xbox 360 next-generation console, the FT said.

Sony is likely to reveal more on its plans for the console at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif., in March and the E3 video games show in Los Angeles in May, the FT said.

That sucks but $900 screaw that I guess i'm buying an XBOX360. One thing is for sure I have seen a couple of the games the PS3 will have and the 360 can't compete, PS3 owns the 360 but at a very high price.

It's not going to cost YOU $900.. Same thing happend when Microsoft first come out with the Xbox it cost them $500 to make but they sold it $300 at a loss because what they really make money on is the games.. (They get a % of each game sold.. from all the developers)

I expect a $599 price tag.. you can quote me on that.

When does it never delay. The only thing bad with sony and the playstation is that they are never in time for there release. I remember when GT3 was suppose to come out in December & actucally got release the next year around July.

I Dont Mind Waiting!! Its Always Worth It. Playstation Has Never Dissapoint Me. I Got The Ps2 And Psp To Keep Me Busy Until Then.

ill pay $900 for a ps3 I mean come on guys the computer chips in those things are better than the ones the defense dept. has in there guided missles...lol

Well, it's been confirmed. The Playstation 3 will be delayed and will instead debut in November.

If you've been waiting anxiously for Sony's PlayStation 3, get ready to wait a little longer.

Sony on Wednesday confirmed that it's pushing the worldwide release date for the game console to early November. The company cited delays in finalizing copyright protection specifications in the Blu-ray standard, which will be the underlying HD DVD format for the PS3.

The PS3 had been scheduled to debut this spring. The company is aiming to release the console simultaneously in the U.S., Europe and Japan.

Rival Microsoft launched its next-generation Xbox 360 device in November 2005. The PS3 postponement would be a second black mark for Sony, which also faces much higher component costs.

Even with the delay, Sony hopes to ship 6 million units around the globe by the end of the year, Ken Kutaragi, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said at a press briefing in Tokyo. The company plans to build manufacturing capacity that can produce 1 million units per month, he said.

Kutaragi also said that the new PlayStation will have a 2.5-inch 60GB hard drive and will run the Linux operating system.

For game software, the company plans to release titles in the Blu-ray Disc format (BD-ROM). By producing up to 10 million copies a month, it expects to keep manufacturing costs as low as with current double-layer DVD-ROMs.

Sony also plans to launch a PlayStation Network Platform, an online service, around the time of the PS3 debut. The service is expected to compete with Microsoft's Xbox Live.

Sony is the leader in the game console arena with more than 100 million PlayStation 2 sold worldwide.

Blu-ray is a critical technology for Sony, not only for differentiating the PS3 from the Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Revolution, but also in a DVD standards battle. In that arena, it is up against the HD DVD format being backed by Toshiba.
