i had the manual octabox, before i got a speed ring...
and those are harder to put together.
they quality of your images will be a lot better with a softbox, then with a umbrella.


try it once.
 
Actually, I think you got a lot right in that shot, it looks pretty good. Nice work matching the ambient light. If it were not for the eye makeup, the only thing I would nit-pick is the that the foreground is a little brighter than your model, and it makes me look away from her.

Also, if you want a large diffuse source that is easy to setup, you can bounce your light off a reflector. It can work well in some situations.

Edit: Just occurred to me, a beauty dish may be what you are looking for? Easy to setup, good light control and easy to manage in the wind. Just a thought...
