my half assed engine rebuild

well its come time for my second headgasket job :/

the first time was a disaster (cheapo ebay gaskets), but this time im trying to have it last for longer than a month

so far ive got the head at new jersey auto for machine work (resurface and valve job), i have a new felpro head set and a toyota oem headgasket. i was thinking of doing the front and rear seals but im just feeling too lazy to take off the tranny and crank pulley :/. i really should though

i guess i should be doing rings and honing the cylinders blahblah but the thing is im leaving for college in a couple months so i dont want to be dumping too much into this thing when im prolly gonna leave it here or sell it.

is there anything im missing here or any advice from u veteran engine builders?

btw another weird thing is that i drained the coolant, but theres still coolant sitting in the waterjacket...lots of coolant. im pretty sure this isnt normal..any ideas?

engine is a 4age bigport

veteran engine builders? on this website? lmao

If youre gonna sell it, what you're doing will suffice, if you were gonna keep it, I would rebuild the bottom end as well. good luck

How do the waterjackets on the bottom of the head look. Make sure they don't look like they're corroded because the jacket will be very close to the seal of the gasket and more than likely blow again. Just make sure the machine shop says the head is good. Im sure if they took it to do the work the would have said something right there. Just take a look at it when you get it. :bigthumbu

u think would it work well if i ran it with what im doing for a few months, then came back to it at a later time to do the bottom end? i'm still not sure if im selling it or leaving it home but im prolly not taking it with me. (dont trust it that much :p)

also, whats involved in doing the bottom end? pistons, rings, rods, bearings?

the bottom of the head looks like shit. the valves are so nasty it looks like pizza. im doing a valve job along with resurfacing and theyre gonna put it in an oven and do some heavy duty cleaning shit so hopefully all the corrosion will be gone

if your gonna open the motor up do it all at once, your gonna hate doing the job twice, trust me just do the whole engine know!! your already halfway there!!! just rebuild the bottomend while u have the time, youll probly be sorry that you didnt do it now!!!!!!!!!!!

hehe this is already my second time (5 hours instead of 3 months :p)

but dam i just dont wanna spend a grand+ on it when im gonna be leaving in a few months...i really do wanna do it correctly but maybe just not yet

where u get a grand from! you remove the engine yourself, you can deffently clean the block yourself(brake cleaner, soapy water) and u can buy a hone tool at any autoparts store (pepboys/dscount auto) hone the block yourself) piston rings and bearings will cost at the most $200 and a head gasket cometic-$125, gasket kit and liquid gasket around -$150 so its not as expensive as you think it would be, but if u dont do it now it will turn around and bite u in the ass, your gonna kill yourself when u put it all back together and then 2 weeks later you got bottomend problems and know u gotta take it back apart again! do it right the first time please!!

oh...i thought u meant replacing pistons..
so $200 for rings and bearings, $300 for machinework and gaskets...$60 toyota oem headgasket...if i was already down there i should do front and rear main seal($40) i gues...and i'd also want do replace that horribly slipping clutch ($100) agh. pain in my assss :)

i dotn know about removing the engine because i dont have an engine lift...you think its possible to do all this with the engine in the car? hehe i'd want to hone and clean the cylinders though (dont know how)...wow. i wish some magical mechanic man could come down with free parts and labor and do this shit for me :p

thnx for the advice...i gues its back to the drawing board :)

If you car has a crossmember running through the bottom just unbolt everything and lower the engine with a jack. Thats how some of the honda guys do it. Lol i for one wouldn't touch a MR2 lol.

buddy i told diego the same shit with all the money u spent or going to spend u could have already had a gze swapped in

yea i know.... but even the "new" 20 year old gzes have got the risk of having the same problems this engine has. dude ill come back to this car one day, and treat it nicely....when i have money :p

a motor can have a blown head gasket at 10k miles mileage doesnt really matter especially when importing from japan or the islands
