Camera Suggestions

where are you taking your color photography class? i know that alot of the classes at dade dont allow digital slr's, has to be film.

u r indeed wrong my friend...i attend FIU plus what you are talkin about is general photography or classic photography....but nice try:bigthumbu

i do agree with zack partially about mp and ken rockwell. his blog is very nikon biased. he doesn't get paid by nikon otherwise he wouldn't have posted about needing a bailout. also mp are important but aren't killer. not everyone is going to be cropping and blowing up their prints.

for the op i'd look at a used 30d over an xti/d40/d60 esp if you have bigger hands. a grip on any of the others will help though. the 30d will do more fps, better image quality, higher iso capabilities. also higher end nikon glass is harder to come by. not every lens will have autofocus on the d40, and i think the d60 but i could be wrong.

see what feels right in your hand. if you can't find a 30d just hold a 40d they are almost the same. my hands aren't huge but they aren't small. when using the camera for awhile or with larger lenses your hand will hurt alot quicker than with a larger body.

^^40d and 30d are more expensive than both nikon d40/d60, from what you are saying they have more capability(canon's) compaired to the nikon and they are easier to find lenses for??? Its seems real simple for me to pick up a nikon at a good price but the canons are more expensive and I'm not really sold that the price tag is accounted for......also i have to take the sizes into account too....well continue on guys help a brother out lol...

Lenses>Body...but be very sure when you do indeedd buy the camera. i got the d40 and now its like bleh, i want something better. but for the time ive had it its been nothing but good to me

I was saying a used 30d, they go for around $600. A friend of mine sold his with a grip and I believe extra battery for $600. I said to go hold a 40d because it will probably be harder to meet up with someone to hold their 30d because the 40d and 30d are almost exactly alike just better weather sealing on the 40d.

So lets compare now. Pick up a 30d with a kit lens for around $700 and have a much better body, more AF points, weather sealing, more fps, better image quality, every lens in canon's line-up will AF except for the old film lenses. You'll more than likely keep this body for quite some time.

Get a d40 with the kit lens for $500-600, I'm not 100% sure on the price. Get a small body that if shooting for quite sometime will hurt your hand. Nikon doesn't even make a grip for the camera so you need to buy 3rd party grip that only works when the body is turned to timer. Not every Nikon lens will AF on your camera. Yeah you have to find lenses with focusing built into the body. You get 3 focal points, it doesn't seem that important but when your shooting with lenses at f2.8 and lower and your dof is so shallow you'll wish you had more. The body build quality isn't that great either.

Honestly if I was in your situation I'd spend the extra little bit of money for the 30d even though its used you'll love it alot more.

if i were to buy a used camera it would have to have warranty/insurance....... but more fps and more selection of lenses sounds intriguing as far as the canon goes......thanks for all the great info....u guys are a big help

I don't see why you guys are complaining about the cameras you have. Everyone that I talk to that has a base model camera is complaining about how its not that good and they need a new body. Guy had a D50 for like 3 years and he reached the potential of it. Most of you have had your cameras less than a year and you think you need something better? I haven't seen anything even close to as good as Guys shots coming from any of you. You guys really don't shoot that much and its a hobby for you, imo there's really no need to upgrade.

Not just singling you out Emil and I'm not tryin to be a dick or rag on any of you and say your shots are shitty, I'm just saying that I don't think you guys have reached the potential of the camera yet.

And Zack I've seen a full page print from a D40 and it looked great

full page print, is what 8x14? nothing big.
yeah you can print 8x10s all day with a d40, but once you start cropping and shit you are throwing away pixels. a kid in my photography class has a d40, he cropped a picture and it looked really good on the computer, he tried printing a 8x10 and it came out very jpegy/pixelated. for the OP he is going to be taking a college class which may require to be printing pictures for grades. why buy a camera for 600$ that isn't that good, when you can buy a proconsumer body for the same price that offers so much more. the 30d is almost the same as a d200, which is the camera of choice by most weekend wedding photographers. another big down fall with the d40/60 is that it doesn't have auto focus with a lot of lens.

seriously if i was in the OP's shoes here is what i would buy:
Used Nikon d80-or-Canon Xti
50mm 1.8 (you will learn more about composition)
75-300 (if you do plan on taking pictures at drift events)

its all up to the OP to make his own decision.
if you need to ask any questions feel free to ask.

i didn't know you could pick up a used d200 for that little. there you go. either 30d or d200 you'll love either.

fal you hurt my feelings :( jk. i've used my camera body for 3 yrs and have put about 40k acuations on the shutter. it's great til you burst in raw and fill the buffer quickly.

ok......if i were looking for a used camera what would be my best bet??? I've been searching amazon and ebay, but to be honest i dont trust the sellers and this is not a cheap item so for it to be a dud would hurt......if i bought a used camera i would really like to meet the seller personally and have the opportunity to test everything and have his word that it works (extended warranty if possible) where could i find ppl selling local?? (miami)

craigslist
i have bought a lot of camera gear from there, and meet with the seller to see if everything is cool

your best bet is either a
d200/30d
or d80/xti

even if it is film
a cheap canon ae-1 is like 30 bucks on ebay

canon film FTW! as far as price goes.

anyways, back to the topic, id stay away from lower level nikons for the simple fact that you cant use all the nikkor lenses. personally, id go for d200 or 20/30/40d and feel them in ur hand before making a choice. i chose the 40d yet my uncle swears by his d200. its all opinion.

^^ my dad is the same way. nikon d200 all the way. i'll be picking up a 40/50d soon.

craigslist or fredmiranda.com or photography-on-the-net.com (i don't know what the actual website is.)
