hey guys sup,

i was just wondering whats the deal with tire stretch, its just looks or does any improve for daily driving, drag or drifting. :D reason i ask its cuz i was at the bank yesterday afternoon cashing out my paycheck $$ got out and saw a s13 park on the otherside i took a quick look at the tire stretching at his wheels dont know if the s13 is on the drifting scene or just wanna look cool or funny cool but it was an eye catching pretty cool .

Some people do it for fitment on waaayyy low cars. Some people say it stiffens the sidewall. I honestly have no opinion on it.

The only way I see a stretched tire on a wheel working is if you run a 275 on a 13 or 14 wide wheel.

No its not. It can be more resistant to rolling over but only to a degree and at the sacrifice of your contact patch and break-away point. With modern sidewalls, its a retarded justification. Its for looks and fitment well above anything else.

And let's not forget you need to run a smaller tire to perform a stretch, as Tony said it won't allow full contact of the tire on the road. And I think it's retarded to run -4 camber and or lower in the rear.

You could increase static contact patch more with lowered air pressure but it comes with a cost. The reverse is true with increased air pressure. There are always trade-offs. I think allure of stretched tires in a performance application came to light b/c of the HKS cyber evo. It still runs a mild stretch - in the rear interestingly enough. I like a tire stretch up front for turn-in feel and steering response. I have it in the rear to fit my wheels. wah wah. The point is, in some applications there may some advantage to stretching a tire but people need to realize a 245 on a 9.5 is a very mild stretch when comparing to setups w/ 205's on 9.5".

i always figure it reduces the sidewall flex/rollover by already taking the flex of the sidewall and stretching it. thus making your tires feel, break away, grip, more consistent. if you dont have a mild-mid stretch and have too low air pressure you roll over real bad.

heh, im running 235/8.5s and 265/9.5s so i have very little to no stretch anyways. Id run more stretch but right now the XXR Wheels i run are only available in 8.5 or 9.5 in 18s.

Please elaborate... Im not the smartest guy so please tell me how a properly sized tire has less contact patch than a stretched tire

Because a "properly sized" tire, like oem style, doesn't contact the entire tread width the on pavement, and rolls over with side load. I'm not talking like a 205 on a 10" wheel though. More like a 255 on a 10" wheel. Dudes are even stretching tires in drag racing, in the 10.5" tire class people started running like 15" wide wheels and picked up a lot of grip.

How about the idea that people stretch tires because the thinner the tire the less $$$$. So Instead Of me forking over $$ for 265 on an 18'' I save like $80 on a 225.

So some of us just do it because we are poor cuz our cars suck away all our money lol.

It's dumb if you have the power for 265s because it sucks to drive with little tires. If you only have the power for 225s, but you got some cool wheels, then just run the 225s.
