vlsd in s13

Im swapping a j30 vlsd into my s13 to replace the open diff. I did the same on my s14 and i loved it. The only difference is that on the s14 it is a direct replacement. Ive always thought for the s13, all you had to do is change the rear cover, but according to this link here http://importnut.net/lsdswap.htm, you need to replace the front bushings with metal spacers.

Yes i know welded is better for drifting, you dont need to tell me this. I have my reasons for going with a vlsd

I was just wondering if anybody has done a vlsd swap on their S13 and could give me some advice on what to use for the spacers and how its done?

thanks in advance

naw i just did this...u need the axels of course and the rubber diff mount thingys from an s14..i shaved the rubber on the s14 bolt washer thigs and it fit good...
i drove with washers on the bolts and it creaked too much for my liking so i used the s14 stuffs and it was tight like a virgin

just weld your open diff, cuz for drifting there is nothing better for the price, j30 can suck it!!! honestly

i just put a z32 diff in my s13. i had to use j30 axles. only thing you need is the longer two bolts on the differential that are on the side towards the engine. but i did this with a z32 and needed z32 bolts. idk if you can use stock bolts from the s13 that will fit into the j30 or if you need j30 bolts. im sure theres something online for it. google it

yeah u can use the s13 bolts but need to put washers to hold diff up cause the mounting hole in front of diff r bigger than the s13 ones....

the j30 iirc is a bit shorter but only by a few mm's. theres enough play in the driveshaft that they fit fine though

You dont need new axles if you pick the 6 bolt diff... And as far as using the rubber bushings, according to the link i posted: "Also note the rear cover is aluminum and rather fragile. If the front end of the diff is allowed to move then it puts stress on the solid mounts on the rear of the diff"

as stated, im not welding my open diff, i have my reasons. My j30 in my s14 was good enough for me, and i dont want a welded for a daily driven car period

So i would need to replace the differential bolts on the front side with longer ones from a z32 and those would work fine? Or are the j30, s14, and z32 bolts all the same, and any should replace the s13 ones just fine?

Its actually longer by about half an inch or so because of the ABS sensor, which is about half an inch to 3/4ths of an inch extra. The drive shaft on an ABS 240 is a bit shorter but not by much.

Sweet, thats good to know. How many washers did you need and how exactly did you do it? Im thinking this is probably a lot less complicated then it sounds

no hey i think i used longer bolts like s14 ones...and just one washer fit on the bolts and werked good....if u dont have the s14 bolts ...broward bolt has everything...and the bolts have pintle threads..the same as wheel studs..altough its better to use the rubber thingys from the s14...it werked better...with no flex...with just a washer or two the difff will move under load....or creek....i kno i was happy when i took off the washers...u can use like a a long washer which is a cylinder, spacer type thing

you can just buy the oem bushings from nissan but they are lil pricey or you can just swap out all the guts to your s13 case and not have to ever worry about the bushings.

im really sorry but i cant really understand what you are saying. Only thing i got out of this was that broward bolt has the s14 bolts, its better to use the rubber bushings from the s14 (which according to the link i posted, thats not true)

Im not talking about the bushings that go around the bolts in the back, im talking about the front ones by the driveshaft, which apparently dont have bushings and are mounted solidly.

As far as swapping the guts, thats a good idea, but another reason i like the j30 vlsd is because of the slightly taller gear ratio it gives, since im going to be making way more power than i did with my s14

i've swapped the actual diff a few times. all you have to do to keep the gearing is pull the pinion out of the j30 and use the s13 crush bushing.

oh yeah and make sure you shim it properly and have the proper gear mesh. if not that thing will sound like a jacked up mall crawler in no time

you guys kill me get j30 diff with bushings and bolts from junkyard switch cover and install done.

Thats what i thought it was, but apparently you need to mount the front end of the diff metal on metal with spacers... im just trying to see the easyest way to do the spacer method. AKA asking people whove done it what theyve done and ill just do the same thing.

iff i get the 240 saturday, it has a vsld(j30) wit axels wana trade?

Fuck yeah, and ill buy those gauges if you dont want them

ill sell the guages for 600$ a piece..their rare gauges, 1 is the brake light fluid, knock meter, headlight fluid , and turn signal pressure
