Hi, so I have 6spd trans from s15 and I get a whine when I dont have the clutch engaged even when I am in neutral. Once I depress the clutch it goes away. The sound is like i have SC gears. I have searched online and I got a variety of answers from the throw out bearing, release bearing, trans is bad, and just need to flush and add oil. I highly doubt there is a problem with the clutch or the gears. The car shifts fine.

Also another minor problem I have is that when I fill the car with gas till its almost full ( before it goes "click") gas starts leaking from somewhere at the top of the gas tank. I am thinking its the fuel filler or the seal. I know 240sx's have this problem, ill research some more. My gas gauge doesnt work anyways so i have to investigate further anyways.

THANK ERRBODY

I've been super busy with school and after some research I do not see how the throw out bearing could be worn. To my understanding if the cutch is pushed in, the TOB pushes the pressure plate and clutch. Therefore thats when it should be making noise. I would think its the input shaft bearing. Zilvia was no help at all. Any thoughts?

usually anything to do with pushing the clutch in and hearing a whining, shiming, chirping, or humming is usually the throw out bearing. ive had this problem, i know friends with the problem now.

.
...or maybe it is the TOB. It sounds just like this^ I guess if it is the TOB ill replace it and the clutch. I read that you cannot resurface the dual mass flywheel of the s15. ill do more research but any info would be appreciated.

If it makes noise with the clutch pedal *pressed* then its most likely the throw out bearing.

If it makes noise *not pressed* its most likely the transmission bearings.

My reasoning is that when the clutch is not pressed the engine is turning the input shaft and the throw out bearing is not turning. When the clutch is pressed the input shaft stops spinning and the throw out bearing is now turning.

that was my reasoning^ but everybody says TOB... I dont wanna be buying a whole bunch of different parts and I dont trust mechanics, one dude told me I needed a new transmission... But i guess I'll take it to a trans shop. Thanks for the info

By the way if it's not that loud I would try changing the transmission fluid and keeping it like that for a while. The bearing can last a long time before they develop enough play to brake things or seize up lol.

^right, its always a fun game of -this could fail and cause much more damage, but im lazy- I play it sometimes.

How is everyone except this dude ^ backwards? The release bearing isn't doing anything when your foot isn't on the clutch.

what i get from this...remove tranny to see whats up. The TOB is easy to replace but I have no idea about the input shaft bearing. I'll do some search. or I could pick up new tranny but I wuv my 6 speed.
