Tranny & Oil Coolers ?

I was at upullit and copped what looks to be an OEM tranny cooler for an auto dohc. Didn't know they came with them? Well I want to convert it to an oil cooler, is that possibleea?
 
the oem tranny cooler is the radiator it self... well in S14s that is. im sure you can use an external tranny cooler as a oil cooler. either that or a power steering cooler.
 
thanks for the input. I see what you sayin chuck, but this is an external tranny cooler with hard lines and went straight back to the tranny and everything...? Why doesnt my dohc SE have this? thats what I want to know.

I'd like to clean this one out since it I already have it. I'm just concerned if oil pressure is too strong for it?

i wouldnt worry about building to much pressure..id b worried about not building enuff cause now yur gonna slow it down slightly..and that cooler might have been added on thats y it was there.evry auto 240 has the cooler built in the radiator
 
Considering a radiator system might operate at 13-17psi with an aftermarket cap. And your engine oil pressure operates at 70psi at 3000rpm or some jazz........ I would be weary about putting that much pressure into the radiator. Engine oil that is. It would work fine on the low pressure side of the power steering but that is already cooler then engine temperatures any ways.. I know the automatic transmission is a huge high pressure hydraulic system, I think the transmission cooler is on the low pressure side.

I would not try to incorporate the factory transmission oil cooler as an engine oil cooler. They make specialty radiators for this purpose.

damn the thing I got is a tranny cooler and the fittings won't work for an sandwich plate. I guess my next question is how to drill holes in the tranny and where and make it work for a tranny cooler?

well my friend you need to get a pump to make that work. look up the tranny pumps for the tow cars that get towed behind a motor home. that will make your life a little easier.
 
honestly its easier to use the oil cooler off a fc rx7. saw a couple when i went with luigi on monday. upullit chargers like 11 buck for them too. then all you need is a sandwich and lines which you could get at a hydraulics shop.
 
We do not need transmission coolers on our manual transmissions. If one of us start road racing and start blowing transmissions every race then id consider installing one, until then keep the things that might break to a minimum.
 
it would take alot to kill the tranny. but seriously for oil coolers the fc one is sex. nice and thick and really big. ;)
 
I think all you would need is to get some fittings that thread into the fill and drain plugs, and fill the tranny thru the shifter and add an extra quart of fluid. I think a small fuel pump would work depending what fluid is used. some trannys use ATF which isnt that thick.
