sr20det: strange idle?!?!

well, been driving my car with my sr20 in my car about a month, and it still wont idle right.

without any idle adjust, it idles at cold startup around 900rpm thats fine but when the motor starts to get warm it surges between 700-1300rpm thats not right. also when i drive the car and just pop it into neutral it just dies, i got to pop start it to keep it running, or wait for rpms to drop around 1000 then take it out of gear and it will hold idle then begain to surge up and down.

now i use the idler screw to help idle out, the only way it will work is i set the screw so on cold startup it idles around 2000rpm and once motor is warmed up it will idle arond 1500, any lower idle screw setment the motor will die out when put in neutral. it also will randomly start to sure up and down.

this will all depend on temperature if it colds out but please help.

major thing my vacuum at its strange idle is like 13-14 wtf

igot got on my motor greedy intake manifold could this be a problem?

could be the manifold.. could be your brake booster hose has a crack in it (normal problem for 240s).. you have some vacuum lines messed up.. your throttle cable is loose/too tight? idk could be bunch of stuff really.

Its your IACV. Mine does the same thing. Take the vacuum off your IC pipe and spray some carb cleaner down there - it'll clean it out. For some, this is a permanent fix, for others (like me) it will only help for a bit and then go back to normal (idle hunting) which means you probably need a new IACV.

Try unplugging the IACV if the problem goes away there is your problem. It not vacuum leak? Do a compression test also. I noticed many SRs will Idle Hunt before they go. Are you useing an Open Atmosphere BOV? S AFC? More details.

i am useing an atmosphere bov (greddy rs) no safc(not hooked up) but its strange my idle will change with the weather!lol! its cold out very hight idle like 2200 if its warm/humid out like 1500 but once motor gets warm like 140deg.(no termastat) it runs around 1200(i have the idle screw up alittle to help idle) wtf? I have no intake gasket on the motor just liquid gasket could take be a problem? why is my vacuum at 13 not like 20 like it should? also will no thermostat make the idle diffrent? Tommorow im installing a thermostat that opens at 170degress, and will be taking off the manifold and reinstalling it with a correct paper gasket. please people give me more suggestions!! what happens and how do i get my car to run right with no ivac? Should i remove it and hold idle with the throttle body? is it a right thing todo? Remember this is my track car and ALSO MY DAILY! but it can still be a little ruff on the outside edges.

No thermo will make your idle go crazy when its cold ( im runing with out one too!) becuase the motor trys to idle high to heat up quicker. that could be all it is, but it might not be did you run the coolant lines to the IACV like it has from factory? that could also be a prob since the IACV needs to heat up with the motor. as far as your vac being so low that means you got a leak some where in your system. other then that try like homeboy said^ bleeding the coolant system.

does it die off the rev? greddy rs fuks up your idle when vented to the atmosphere, bypass your bov and see if that helps(the case with my s13). if so you probably need to recirculate it, or get an hks ssq. the rs doesnt seal properly for sr's, i was told they have too much vacuum or something.

or, if your smoking out the tailpipe it could be the turbo.

does your exhaust note change? does it lean out? could it be mafs?

i am no expert. but hopefully this helps, or at least rules out a problem that it ISNT. lol

my money is on iacv or un-circulated bov.

i put a thermostat in the motor today. the idle deffently change when the thermostat opened, but now my motor overheats? this is pissing me off! i have a temp guage on the lower rad pipe, and my motor still doesnt reach past 140degree, but the oem sensor shows my car at H what is going on? my car is still idleing crazy though! im gonna try cleaning the ivac-what do i do? to i spray carb cleaner in the hose and start the car? do i do this while it is rnning, do i take it off and clean it? what do i do? besides for that i just replace all my vacuum lines with brand new ones that are really thick and dont expand or collapse on them selfs under boost or vaccum-that did change anything. im gonna order a new intake manifold gasket and throttlebody gasket.maybe this should make a diffrent in the vacuum and hopefully the idle, as for the overheating, im letting my car cool down right now and im gonna check the system and see if there is any air trapped in the system, if not im just gonna take the termostate out. please i need help get the thoughts, ideas ,and comments coming.

ok-i just did alot of diagonisis to my car and it got me no where! i took the theremostat out because it didnt make a diffrent and it made my car run hot. what ever i can deal with that. now like someone suggested to clean out the ivac. i bought some throttle body cleaner, i sprayed some down the ivac line and then started the car. i did this like 4 times,-nothing. so i took it off the manifold and cleaned it out(wasn't really dirty but whatever) replaced it back on the manifold with some liquid gasket. started the car and nothing is different. same strange idle.? now i tried this with throttle body cleaner, brake cleaner, and starting fluid- i sprayed it around all the intake gaskets, ivac, injectors, injector o-rings, hoses, intercoolerpiping -anything that would have to do with ivacuum and guess what NOTHING CHANGED. if there was a vacuum leak the engine would have reved up right? but nothing just keep sitting there surging idle. the next thing is im going to unplug the ivac and see what happens. when i unplug the ivac what is suppose to happen on a normal operationg sr20det? does it just shut off or rev what? so i can compare what happens to mine. whats this i hear about the gredy rs bov not working to well with to much vacuum explain? and ive seen many other people using atmosphere bov and theres idles just fine. but that should effect idle does it? i have an safc but the maf is wired to it yet(waiting for wideband) but i can set the decel air in the safc so will that solve my idle problem? and if this is an ivac problem im just gonna remove it and hold idle with the throttlebody. is this a great idea or no ? has anyone done this before? please info help?

You could just have a bad IACV then. When I cleaned mine, I took the big vacuum line off the i/c pipe and sprayed carb cleaner down there (while the car's running - creating vacuum so it sucks it in).

Hey wassup, try adjusting the screw for the throttle body... I dunno if you remeber but you and your friend came to buy a bumper from me... Well remember I was saying my idle is crazy, a friend of mine looked at it for one minute and adjusted it and it was perfect again. My car was idling real crazy too. Try that and see what happens.
