Sputtering on Second Gear

This is actually for my friend's Miata. It's the gen before the current one. I'd say somewhere mid-90's.
He was telling me that sometimes on second gear when he's not on high RPMS and he kicks in the gas it sputters. I felt it. It's like it's going then the fuel just cuts out for a second, then goes, and off, for about two or three times then it starts going again. I didn't get to drive it nor did he explain it a lot in detail, just wondering if anyone knew what it might be?

P.S. Miata's are mad fun.
 
But it only happens in second gear?
Could plugs/wires/filter be the culprit if it's only happening in one gear?
 
its not possible for an engine to sputter in only one gear
 
anything is possible..........0_o.....need more details, change fuel filter
