Rebuilding our Engines

Is rebuilding an engine (Like an sr20det) for a 240sx something you can learn on your own with a Manual and some help from the forums, or is it something thats reserved for automotive technicians in the community? The reason I'm asking is because I've learned to repair most of my car on my own, but never dug deep into the engine. Is it something I would have to go to school for?

there is a how-to for everything online....the real question you should be asking is when shit goes not according to the plan or different from the write-up will you have enough know how to finish what you started?? alot of ppl think stuff is easy because of the forums.......for example if u follow a writeup on rebuilding the engine and do it correctly and then u can't get it timed properly and u have electrical gremlins what would be your next step?? you will have to pay and will have wasted alot of time and money trying to accomplish the task yourself.......

I see what your saying. I might be able to follow instruction and do the work well, but my lack of experience in troubleshooting can stop me from ever completing the job. Would you recommend taking classes at a nearby tech school? Or did you learn another way?

P.S. - Thanks to your signature, it took me a minute before I realized you responded to my post. LoL :bigthumbu

this soooo much of this !!!!

shit's real easy. make sure u get a manual for all the clearances, torque settings, order of torqueing, and then lube every moving part. read up online and books how to do it.

its pretty easy to fuck something up just by being lazy and cutting corners, if i was you, i would find somebody(friend would be better) that has successfully rebuilt the motor, and pay him to walk you through it step by step. thats a good way to learn.

If your unsure about something, then it would be wise to know someone who has experience in building engines. Might cost your a little money or as we do over here, food and beer, but you'll know that you have someone for all the technical shit.

school is only good for so much, i have a friend who graduated from um as an automotive engineer, and calledme to ask where the oil filter on his civic was.

i used a video of an sr20 rebuild. i tried to buy it from sr20det.com or something but those F-ers never sent it to me and took my money. Anyway, add "bittorrent" to any sr20 build google search you have and you should be able to come up with something. definetly a good visual when you're trying to grasp everything that's involved. then the manuals are good for exact things like torquing bolts and clearances. thing about it is, like everyone said, when i finished my build and i cut some corners, it took months to figure it out. chris jackson tried to help but in the end i destroyed a whole head.

the lesson i learned: don't switch cam caps from a different head. that's bad juju.
