High tech doesnt always equal strong and strong doesnt always equal better.
The 2JZ is simple, strong, proven (especially for Ueno) and easy to get parts for in Japan.
The 335 motor, is light (magnesium block), dual CONTINUOUSLY variable valve timing, a special sequential turbo system, that is simpler than Mazda or Toyota ever came up with, but actually functions better. They spent 6 years developing the damn system to perfection. And also invented a special technique to make the whole cooling system from aluminum (since magnesium reacts with water) and then cast magnesium around it....
German engineering will usually win, the Japanese are kings of bettering other peoples ideas.
