power steering cooler..

Hello! so i was thinking of installing a power steering cooler in my car but what i wanted to know was,what if instead of using a seperate cooler,i just bought an (automatic) radiator which comes with atf line feeds on the bottom of it n linked it there?would it have the same concept?the reason for this idea is my radiator is falling apart anyways so why not kill 2 birds with one stone?i have a z31 btw.
 
hmm im not sure how hot powersteering fluid gets..
if it doesnt get as hot as the water then you will be heating it..
but if its the other way around i dont see why that wouldnt work
 
because technicaly that passage on the radiator is designed for atf.So shouldnt it be chambered away from the heat of the water?the only thing that would worry me is if there was a coolant overheating issue and the atf would heat up with it.i duno :0hnoes:
 
dont do it! powersteering fluid does not get anywhere near as hot as ATF. you would actually start to heat it. if you wanna still get an auto rad you can use the ATF cooler for your engine oil. its not like an aftermarket one but it will drop temps a lil.

Need another 8ft of 3/8s pressure hose, high pressure hose(ebay is good, i got isis), and if you can find it 5/8s of pressure hose for return line, if not then just get 3/8s but your going to have to use some strength to get the bitch on there.

Cut about a half a foot from the fitting closest to the wheel that goes into you rack, flare the end of the pipe, cut about 4.5ft of the 8ft hose, use the 4.5ft hose and attach it from the cooler to the pipe with the fiting, use the other 3.5ft hose and attach that from the cooler to the resivior. Take the 1ft hose and attach it from the pump to the resivior(its going to be a bitch to get them on there, if you have a drill bit, maybe drill it a little bigger out to see if it will go on easier) and attach the pressure hose from your pump to rack. Mount the cooler somewhere.(Mounted mine behind the drivers side vent)

thats a prety cool idea thanks :) well my power steering is squirting prety bad. somewere by the pump.probably the pressure hose? i still have to find the leak but i def wana reinforce it.

i think the piping set up for the z31 is differnt from a 240.my high pressure hose might have to be a bit longer.i dont see why im cutting the hard line?

Maybe im thinking about this wrong - feel free to correct - is it possible to put the cooler between the reservoir and the pump itself? basically just cutting some hose rather than fittings/hardlines?

i thought it was supposed to be between the rack n the reservoir..
 
the best thing to do is to get a underdrive pulley for your powersteering pump. cause your prob running into the prob of cavitateing the fluid at high rpm's. you can still upgrade the stock cooler with an aftermarket if you want, but you'll notice more improvement with the pulley than you will with the cooler

i might try that,but i think in low rpms it might make the steering hard.

im just wondering why it you couldnt put it anywhere inline and still cool the fluid? Especially right before it re-enters the pump?

the cooler needs to be installed anywere on the low pressure side. plus at low rpms its not that bad, you still have some poweersteering and plus its not a 7500lbpick up truck.lol
 
lol^^ i had problems with my PS on my duramax, 325/65's did not want to budge under a 10K# truck. F that, I fixed that in a jiffy.
 
I originally had the cooler between my pump and resivior. It wasnt right. My powersteering would make that noise. Then i asked AKsamauri and he told me it suppose to be in between the resivior and rack. After i did that, my powersteering stopped making the noise.

Cooler is really necessary if you drift i lot. I remember at the last event i went to, i saw another guys ps fluid boiling. Didnt look too good at all. Glad i have mine.
 
Yeah running a PS cooler will help a lot, espacialy for the people that drift, things get really hot when your out there for a few mins .
Just run it like "MADK180sx" said between the rack and reservoir and you don't have to worried about it.
