And to the guy interested in going Canon or Nikon... More professionals shoot Canon, period. The AP, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, etc.. All use Canon Gear - the AP only gives Canon loaners to their dedicated photographers as well as NATGEO.
You don't really need the megapixels as long as it's over 6. What you want to concentrate on is glass. Ill give you words I did NOT like when I got into it, because the guy was kind of cocky about it. Do not go buying a camera and a inexpensive lens combination and expect to be getting prize shots right off the bat. "Its not to say you wont" it's just to say it's not expected with cheap glass. Get a used body such as a rebel, rebel xti or a 10d/20d. Then focus on the L series glass.. Go to adorama.com, ebay.com, B&H photo, and look around at the L series glass so you know what you're getting into. The guy also told me (when I pulled out my 28-135) that I would not be respected in some venues I was shooting NOR get the results until I purchased "pro glass". The guy never told me who he was... However did lend me various lenses during the event I was shooting (600mm, 300mm) etc... Come to find out hes the house photographer for the Miami Heat, Florida Marlins, etc... The guy is FANTASTIC - and gave me a lot of advice that is priceless! The point here - avoid cheap glass. You get what you pay for (period.) Plus L series glass is very forgiving in the sense that it has a little more of a threshold for folks coming into the game that want to get serious.
Good luck! Sorry about the long msg - but hopefully it helps.
