Gah, I so want to get into photography. Everyone I see always has Canon. I rarely see Nikon users.

The largest event that I shot was the 24hr rolex race. There were pro's everywhere. All shooting with Canon or Nikon. Its all up to the user and which brand fits them.

Ok I wasn't sure if it was that or the Sigma one. People have been raving about it. I think that might be my walk around unless I can find a decent 17-70 or something like that.
yea I need a everyday lens, my kit lens has no use

^^ its better than what I have now. I've got the Tokina 10-17 and the Canon 50mm f1.8. I have to buy car parts before I can get a new lens.

Blah.....

Canon 20D
70-200L 2.8IS
24-70 2.8
50mm 1.8
28-135
Various filters
580ex
battery grip
8 batteries
6 cf cards various sizes
Tamrac bag

I think thats it...

And to the guy interested in going Canon or Nikon... More professionals shoot Canon, period. The AP, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, etc.. All use Canon Gear - the AP only gives Canon loaners to their dedicated photographers as well as NATGEO.

You don't really need the megapixels as long as it's over 6. What you want to concentrate on is glass. Ill give you words I did NOT like when I got into it, because the guy was kind of cocky about it. Do not go buying a camera and a inexpensive lens combination and expect to be getting prize shots right off the bat. "Its not to say you wont" it's just to say it's not expected with cheap glass. Get a used body such as a rebel, rebel xti or a 10d/20d. Then focus on the L series glass.. Go to adorama.com, ebay.com, B&H photo, and look around at the L series glass so you know what you're getting into. The guy also told me (when I pulled out my 28-135) that I would not be respected in some venues I was shooting NOR get the results until I purchased "pro glass". The guy never told me who he was... However did lend me various lenses during the event I was shooting (600mm, 300mm) etc... Come to find out hes the house photographer for the Miami Heat, Florida Marlins, etc... The guy is FANTASTIC - and gave me a lot of advice that is priceless! The point here - avoid cheap glass. You get what you pay for (period.) Plus L series glass is very forgiving in the sense that it has a little more of a threshold for folks coming into the game that want to get serious.

Good luck! Sorry about the long msg - but hopefully it helps.

I wouldn't suggest getting L glass as a beginner. Only because your gonna be hurt if you don't really stick with photography. I would suggest getting a used body and half way decent glass. There are some 3rd party lenses that do produce nice results but def aren't going to be L glass quality.

I still don't agree with your saying "Most pro's use Canon" I think it varies for what you do. I know wedding photogs is varied.

Photog where are you located at? I have a proposition for you.

I am in Winter Park area some times, and Longwood the other.

But we can agree to disagree... L series glass can be sold for what it was purchased for in the first few months. I have purchased len's that I didnt like and only took a 15/20.00 hit on them after 3 months of usage and ownership. A lot of people getting into photography know what they are getting into - and most (not all) don't leave the fun world of photography. More pro's do use Canon, I was looking for the site that had the had this poll - I wish I could find it. It was on a Nikon forum too :) It had all of the major places (NatGeo, Ny Times, Sports Illustrated etc etc) and Canon blew it out of the water as far as most of the camera's go. (Sports, with the Mark N running 8 fps) <was the fastest camera in the world> until the arrival of the Mark 3 with it's 10 FPS. The 16.7 Megapixel Canon Mark II for Glamour and Beauty. The weather sealed L series glass... The low noise ratio work of 10D/20D/30D (at 1600/3200) and now the Mark III at 6400 (expansion). Again we can agree to disagree on this... But at every venue I have been too (from sports to weddings to event gatherings) not to mention the poll above - its been the reliability of the Canon and the glass of the Canon. The only thing I can give nikon that is superior - is their flash system. I wish Canon could get that right, however 90% of the stuff I shoot is natural light :)

Feel free to send me a PM ill also PM you my number if you want to give me a ring.

Yeah I will agree Canon is lacking in their lighting department.

Yes the Mark III is the shit and as of lately, from what I know, Nikon isn't putting out good stuff. I couldn't believed they put out the d40. WTF is that. Its an entry level dslr that doesn't have af built in, which kills 3rd party lenses which in the end screws the user because I know if I had to pick up a lens that was Nikon brand or Sigma I'd go with Sigma seeing how I hardly ever have enough for the Brand name stuff.

I gotcha... Well, I am by far not the most patient person in the world! However, I have learned that L is the way to go. Nothing is ever going to be as sharp NOR sharp and weather sealed. Which almost everyone sais "i dont need it" however when their lens gets wet they dont realize how much it's protecting it - as well as beach elements, dust etc...

im on the fence right now because I want to do stuff to my car, however I want that mark III bad....I was able to shoot with it last month (UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) un real!

You lucky bama. I'd love to try it out, but I know that's more camera than I'd ever need. The 5d is enough.

Yes L glass is the way to go if you know your going to be this hobby/field for awhile. Bodies come and go but you'll keep glass for years.

Amen... This young lady (rep for Canon) had no clue what she held in her hands. She tried giving me all the technical aspects of the camera, and before she could I started firing it all back. Like live preview, 10fps, the amount of bursts (jpg/raw)... she about hit the floor haha.. I just wanted to fire it and hug it and... wait nevermind.. so it was well worth it, the problem is there wasnt a bank on a saturday to rob in order to get this beast of a camera! LOL

Right... And I could go with a 4mp 1D - which is just as good, even with low megapixel - still full frame I believe, and is just a hell of a camera. Amazing how that camera is still 900/1k (whooo!)

Any how im still waiting for that call with the proposition!

Nah really doubtful its going to kill them, they are finally going to caught up with canon. Sigma has a quite a few lenses for the new D series Nikons and Nikon has plenty and a bunch more on the way.

for me

Rebel XT, with battery grip
Sigma 70-200 F2.8 EX HSM
Sigma 20 1.8 EX
Canon 50 1.8
Canon 18-55
Canon 35-80
huge assortment of filters and about 12 gigs worth of memory cards

up next a Canon 20d/30d body

I am not sure I understand that message. I can't tell if you're saying Nikon is going to catch Canon or the other way around.

Canon (optically) destroys the Nikon. Nikon has "some" nice glass, but in general they can' touch the Canon stuff. And if you compare camera to camera - Canon is going to beat it. The D200 was brought out to compete with the 30D - and the 30D eats that thing up. (not saying its bad) it just has to have the lens to compliment the camera.

As well (not just for weddings) but moving into sports. The Mark IIn is WAY faster than anything Nikon has PERIOD. Then stepping up to the Mark III with 10 fps, and 10mp.. Enough said.

And with the rumour of the 22MP Canon EOS 1Ds Mk III still floating around to replace the 1ds MkII I dont see how Nikon is going to even remotely catch up. It wont happen....

not downing nikon or canon, I am a canon guy. But its about it seems for Nikon to ditch the body based autofocus. In my little reading, they say its a little slower than lens based and what not. Canon is the best for sports photography, personally anything other than that, its personal choice. Canon is cheaper, and always trys to be one step ahead.

At a point here soon though, its going to slow down. Its almost every year they come out with an updated model of their popular bodies.
