I dont post much, Im more of a drag racer but thought this might affect you guys as well.

NHRA owns D1 from what im told and NOPI has NOPI Drift. how will this affect you guys running the nopi drift series when it comes to points? will you need a d1 license and a NOPI drift license?

Just givin you guys a heads up

At the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NHRA announced that beginning in 2008, the world’s largest motorsports sanctioning body will combine forces with NOPI Motorsports to sanction sport compact drag racing events at NOPI events. The new sport compact race series will be called NOPI Drag Racing Series sanctioned by NHRA.

“This is a logical step for sport compact drag racing,†said Gary Darcy, senior vice president of sales and marketing, NHRA. “Bringing together NHRA and its 50-plus years of experience in conducting competitive drag racing events, and NOPI’s lifestyle activities and events, results in one series that can meet the needs of all the fans, sponsors and the entire racing community.â€

As part of the sanctioning agreement, NOPI drag racing events held at NHRA member tracks will be conducted under NHRA rules. Competition and technical matters onsite at these events will be overseen by NHRA representatives. NHRA will declare a winner at those events and keep points towards NOPI championships in each category. At NOPI Drag Racing Series events held at non-NHRA member tracks, NHRA will not sanction nor will points be accumulated towards championships.

NOPI Motorsports and NHRA will develop classes to ensure that all cars that competed in the NHRA Xplod Drag Racing Series in 2007 will have a place to race in the NOPI Drag Racing Series sanctioned by NHRA in 2008.

“NHRA’s mission is to preserve and promote the sport of drag racing,†said Darcy. “Working with NOPI Motorsports on sports compact racing is intended to further that mission.â€

“This is an exciting time for NOPI Motorsports and the whole NOPI family,†said Mike Meyers, president, NOPI Motorsports. “We have worked extremely hard over the years to develop a strong racing series for our racers, fans and sponsors. This partnership with NHRA is going to allow us to have the best racing series ever imagined. I’m personally excited to be part of racing history, which is exactly what’s happening with the NOPI Motorsports and NHRA partnership.â€

The 2008 schedule for the NOPI Drag Racing Series sanctioned by NHRA will be announced at a later date.

Founded in 1966, NOPI (Number One Parts, Incorporated) is one of the country’s leading parts distributors in the $2.3 billion market for sport-compact automobile accessories. The NDRA is the hottest and most innovative sport-compact drag racing series in the U.S. today. The country’s top drag racers come together for 10 races each year and compete for more than $2.5 million and a $140,000 in yearend prize money. At each NDRA event, sport compact fans can spend the entire day and most of the evening at the track enjoying incredible drag racing action, car shows, swimsuit competitions, burnout contests and concerts with some of hottest names in entertainment.

That whole thing doesn't really have anything to do with drifting. They combined NHRA and NDRA (Nopi) because their race attendance has been really really bad, and sport compact drag racing is basically dying. As far as I know, NHRA has nothing to do with d1, and NDRA has nothing to do with Nopi Drift. This is just a way to keep sport compact drag racing alive a little bit longer. I've been all over the country in both series, and it's kind of sad that it's going away.

my two cents..... nopi already had a drag series, if they combine with nhra then oh fucking well, it will never effect the drift community, and furthermore, tony is completely right, nhra does not own d1, never will. why the hell would a redneck racing company try to own a japanese drifting series? nope sorry buddy. i'm not bashing you just setting it straight. and if any of that would have been said and done at sema i would already know. everyone i work with is there and i am getting daily updates on everything that has been going on and what has been released and what will be released... part of my job is to know what is going on. i'd be there had i not been scheduled for an operation.

Sorry for the mis info this is just what I read. I figured it might affect you guys I was just looking out

how does NHRA own D1??? whoever owns D1 would go kung fu on their ass if they wanted to buy it

That actually was said in SEMA They had a press release for it. Cause of it NHRA lost their title sponsor (Lucas) the same second it was announced.

some food for thought

I know that the conversation is about NHRA and NDRA partnering... and you guys "say" that it has no effect on NOPI Drift...

think about this...

NOPI Drift was drifting in parking lots for a reason... all of the good tracks had contracts with NHRA... so now that they have partnered, the logical thing for NOPI Drift would be...?

and I will let you discuss from there.

Have drift events in drag strips? That'll be a fun manji contest.

I think this will benefit drifting. The major hit on the drag racing scene will probably push a few guys to the drifting scene.

haha true^^^. but im thinking, how long before scca and any drift org. merge to allow more road course usage, than some crappy oval. (i hate ovals i.e.nascar)

If SCCA merges with drifting, it would suck to be the guys that like cheap events. You will start seeing some ridiculous tech inspections, cage requirements, insurances, etc.

I like the grassroots level until I can afford to finish building my car to spec.

That's me.

actually NOPI plans next year to be a road course/ race track drift series. much like FD was parking a few parking lots and moved to full track. the drag strips that are now available to NOPI are going to open up complexes that are similar to Moroso places where they have a whole motorsports park, drag and road course and skid pads.....

this will not negatively effect nopi drift because we ALREADY had stand alone events this year for 1/2 the season, and the others, we stole the crowd from the drag strip. nopi should be really awesome 2008
