Neighbors Manage to Ban Drifting at Altamont Speedway

Before we launch into the coming rant about how completely and utterly inane this potential decision to uphold a proposed ban on drifting at a race track is, we must state that the few times we ever went to Altamont Speedway in Altamont, California was for the Pumpkin Smash 400. The track was watered and soaped down, pumpkins were strewn onto all four corners, and a collection of the most dented cars ever assembled turned it all into a soupy mess of smash-up mayhem for 400 laps. This race is a wildly popular event.

Drifting is also wildly popular. The key difference is at the drift events we've been to there are many more spectators buying coilovers, RC cars, and churros then there are swilling beer and falling over. We politely remind Karin Rivard, the woman in the video complaining about alleged post-race track activities, and who looks as if she may be constipated, that she moved in next to a race track. A motorsports facility. A place where people go to race machines. These people that come to race also occasionally stay overnight in the same RV they used to tow their race cars to the race track. Overnight camping is another activity which Karin, her Hubby, and their Lawyer also want banned.

Thus two people and their lawyer have somehow forced the Board of Supes to potentially uphold a drifting and overnight parking ban at the race track. Mark and Karin Rivard seem to be the sole members of a group called "Community for a Better Altamont". Despite the images of eagles and baby foxes on their web site and in their newsletters, these folks seem to have a personal vendetta against Altamont Speedway, which they moved in next to in 2005. The race track was established in 1966. The ultimate irony is that Mark Rivard himself evidently cared nothing about the baby foxes when he constructed a personal motocross race track on his adjacent to Altamont Speedway property. The board of supes already ruled drifting and overnight camping were OK back in March, but the Rivards appealed the decision.

This excerpt from the Tracy Press back in March.

"The Rivards purchased a plot of land next to the track in 1999. Rivard, an executive at a staffing firm as well as a self-proclaimed former motocross racer, built a motocross track as well as a house on the property. He and his family moved there in December 2005, shortly after Lakeside Motorsports-Altamont, LLC -- a group of investors that includes Bay Area businessmen and a Burbank developer -- purchased the track.

Neither Rivard nor other members of Community for a Better Altamont returned calls seeking comment. Condren said he expects them to continue fighting the track.

'To the Rivards, Altamont Motorsports Park is an absolute," he said. "There is no middle ground -- they want it absolutely gone. And that is not an option.'"

Everything lay in the balance today. The drifters involved plan to win this battle, and take it all the way to the Governator if the Rivards and their Lawyer manage to pull baby foxes through loopholes. The irony of all this is that the time-proven way to get racing off the streets is to give people a place to do it - such as a race track. The commercial at the beginning of the KTVU news video states: "There are endless choices of where you can drive in California." Not for long with people like Mark and Karin Rivard. Always support your local race track. If you don't like racing, then building a house next door to a race track is probably not a great plan. – Mike Bumbeck

It amazes me how ungreatful these guys are. They complain we do it at the streets, and we find ways to take it to the track. They complain that we are at the track, now what? Back to the streets? Build a track away from civilization? Would they pay for it?

The track is there for a reason. They dont like it? Tough shit, move.

lets cut off their ears, is the same down here, all these idiots get a track at fucking countyline drag strip, the kendall mud guys get a track for motoX, but no one builds a goddamn decent road course down here, i say if we get together and send letter to the government we migth get our wish of a nice roadcourse track. lets give it a try lol

First we need the amount of people that county line had. In a matter of numbers, drag racers > drifters.

gawd i hate stupid people like that. If she was so concerned about noise pollution, 1) Don't move in next to a race track. 2) Don't build a moto-x track in your backyard. People used to do the same with skateboarding/BMX back in the day. Assumed that since it was mostly kids between 14-18 doing it, there must be drugs/crime/trouble involved. If the track chooses to allow people to drift and do donuts in their parking lot, more power to them, although it's kind of stupid. But if you have people drifting in the streets, call the cops one or two times, and they won't show up anymore. (I know it sounds harsh, but it's better to be chased away then not allowed to drift at all)

There are other things that should be touched upon on this - as it can go both ways. I agree about the moving near a racetrack, but they built a motorcross track lol... Its the same thing we run into here in Orlando, Florida.

I have been street racing out here quite a bit before the rice showed up, and we rarely had an issue with cops. Now that the rice is here - doing donuts, e-braking through a walmart parking lot at 90 miles an hour, shooting guns in the air, drinking, smoking weed etc... has become common every Saturday night. I can honestly say in the time I street raced with the Z28's, Mustangs, other domestics etc - the only time there was burning out, etc - was in warehouse parking lots. In that rare occasion when some idiot did it, he was either warned or asked to leave.

Plus, the drinking and the drugs that are involved ESPECIALLY here is nuts - especially when you're putting your life, my life, and everyone else's into your hands.

My point here is this, I have hung out with the drifting guys and they are easy going, and seem to be more intelligent about things when it comes down to the (afore mentioned). However, the avg Joe groups (drifters, racers, ricers, etc) all into the same group - which everyone takes the fall for. While we would all love to tell the people "Hey we could be doing worse things" but we choose to race, they will never listen. All they hear is (tonight on the evening news, dead kid, kid thrown out of car, out of control street racers etc...) which makes it more difficult - and how bans come about. They don't realize these BANS are just going to push young adults, into their STREETS, and other area's where things aren't controlled properly!

I kind of went off on a rant, but it's bs that the town allowed them to even oppose the track - since it's a race venue! Wait till one of her kids ends up killed, and she will be asking or demanding that something be done - a place where people can go so they aren't AS aggressive on the highways as they are now. IF anything they should be promoting it, selling lemoade to the races for PTA income or something like that lol... Ok, im done ranting...

Also, do keep in mind while YOU may not do that type of thing (burning out in front of someones house, drifting around street corners etc) put your self in someone elses shoes. Because in all honesty if someone were to be doing that out in front of my house or knocking over my mail box - I would have suggested something be done as well. You have to be fair to all parties... :bigthumbu
