Whats up guys im new to the forum and drift scene. I have a freind that is whilling to trade his Miata for my ATV. The Miata has I/H/E and Full coilover suspension. Im really considering the trade.

I just want to know how drift freindly is this car and is it a good platform to buil on.

Thanks in advance. Looking to be around here more often.

its not the easiest car to slide, but if you want to slide i say just keep it. too many 240's sliding around already. its time for change

ok thanks guys but any additional information as to how mod friendly they are and how affordable parts are to have a decent beginers drift car

well considering it already has n/a mods and coilovers, just weld your diff for 20 bucks and go have fun!

the pinion to the ring gear..

Haha, no, you weld the spider gears to where the left and right axles spin in the same direction simultaneously.

Do this

if your not looking to go pro with it, its a great drift car. actually its not all that much different than an ae86 and people drift those all the time. the aftermarket support is ridiculous amongst the racing community. in fact the miata spec series is The largest scca racing series as far as car count, in other words its the most raced vehicle in the world. it was designed to be a real sports car from the factory, all it lacked was power hence the "secretary" car image. perfect weight balance, 2300 lbs, and if you get the 1.8l 94+ it comes with forged crank, piston oil squirters and (excluding base model) a torsen differential from factory. and at 2300lbs it really becomes an extension of your body and will. parts are affordable and plentiful.
i have a feeling that since you still seem to be on the fence about it you have yet to drive it. please do before you write it off. lets just put it this way, before i bought my miata when i test drove it i found out that the car doesnt just turn, it swivels, it can and will turn on a pubic hair.

Thanks for the response this was the information i was looking for. Im going to try to get pictures later today and Ill post.

hhn2002 hit the nail on the head.
from a miata owner, they are pretty easy to drift! only thing you have to worry about is the snap oversteer they are famous for because of the short wheelbase.
Few things he forgot to mention, the 1.6 model rear ends (89-93) are ticking time bombs. Some have exploded on stock power at less than 20k. So if you plan on doing any kind of drifting and the car is a 1.6 you'll need the 1.8 rear end. The swap is fairly simple and requires only the 1.8 rear assembly, half-shafts, stubs, and driveshaft.
the 1.8 rear end can take 250-350whp all day if you also plan to turbo or supercharge.
Obviously ignore that if you have a 94 and up. I would deff recommend a roll bar (not the cheap chrome style bar bullshit you see on ebay) Harddog- great SCCA approved and makes a bunch of different styles.
The miata aftermarket is one of the cheapest and plentiful i have seen besides hondas.
www.miataturbo.net <--- great resource anything you need to know is there even if you aren't turbo. Keep the miata on the DL, last thing i want is the insurance to go up higher, people start selling them with drift tax ext ext....It's an awesome car man, i will never not own one. But most people won't even bother because of the masculinity factor...
Goodluck!!

you got most of the responses you need already...one thing drive it!! its sooo nimble and even on stock suspension it turns on a dime...yes its underpowered but it is pepy to get around.youll have a smile on your face guaranteed.

short wheel base is a little tricky since you got to have fast countersteer ability since its soo responsive. but its just a matter of getting used to. N/A is going to be difficult for any serious type of drift competitions..but can be done none the less.

post pics damn it!! maybe ill pick it up.. and the whole girly/gay thing about it...the way i see it its just insecurity plus you can make them look super raw.

And make sure your not too tall...LOL. im 5'11 and i just fit in...not cramped but no more room...im sure if i was 6 foot or taller id definetly be cramped.

But heres my biggest issue...there arent many local parts available...sure there is online etc. but locally its kinda difficult to pick up some stuff for the cheap. I have a 240 also and i pick stuff up from here all the time for good deals...rarely is any thing ever for sale for a miata which means online plus shipping. and as far as prices go id say they are very average compared to the rest of imports from the 90's. the hardtop still sells today for 600-1200. For a 15-19 year old car!!! The parts are not expensive but not cheap either...very average.

Theyre pretty cool. Drove a friends with a turbo and coilovers. Fun little car for sure.

i just got one not too long ago... i have the torsen rear end and i have so much fun sliding around in it. i say get it and sell me the coilovers if you do get the car parts for it are everywhere mine ran a 15.7 at the track bone stock so even with a little work done it has so much potential. not to mention the durability. it will run forever and takes abuse all day
