Ka-t

Does anyone know how hard is it or how expensive it is to install a turbo on a KA24DE? (Yes, DOHC, its a 93. :) Parents got it for me for xmas but suprise suprise, you cant exactly hide a car under a blanket in the garage. )

I was thinking along the lines of:

$2000, MAX.

What are your thoughts? I have heard that the KA can basically prduce more power than the SR for less money, through a turbo. I want to know the basics; what kind of turbo; internal or external wastegate; etc.

Thanks.

If you do the work yourself and do some custom fab work it can be done for about $2000... that will get you in the 200-300hp area. But it's pointless to even try if the engine is not in good condition do a compression check or even better a full leakdown before you even think about turbo.

i'm doing one now and it is not too expensive. for 200-400 you can get a nice manifold or get someone to make one for you.... dont get the rev/hard or a knock off cast iron one because they do not fit an s13 very well although it will work, the master cylinder will get in the way. get the jgstools one although it is log style it's real thick and strong. (http://www.jgstools.com/turbo/index2.html) Get a t28 or t3/t4 turbo. The t25 spools super quick but doesn't give good high end power. You also dont need a huge turbo with a crap load of lag. A turbo goes from 300-1500 bucks but dont go too cheap here. There's elcheapo intercoolers on ebay for like 100-200 bucks that are ok for moderate ammounts of boost or get a junkyard one for 40 bucks. $80-90 for sr20det injectors. 150-500 piggy back Fuel management. and 400 for someone to make you a downpipe, charge pipes, and for connectors. and last... misc things... oil lines, clamps, oil, new spark plugs...some more spark plugs say $300.

Thats 3300 max for a good unused setup. or like $1100 for the minimun (new) setup. BTW, Do lots of research beforehand. It's not fun buying parts and finding they wont work and then buying more.

I think he ment $1100 for a USED setup and 3300 for a NEW setup. :D

If you put it together yourself you can get a new turbo setup fot as cheap as 1100. but a kit is a little hard to find for cheap. You can spend like 3500-4000 for a name brand one or get an ssautochrome one for like 650 minus piping that might not fit well and might break. I've heard mixed opinions about ssautochrome. Ive heard some good things and some bad things... mostly bad things. I have seen 2 of his turbos in person and they are nice quality but dont know how they will hold up.

Before you get a turbo go out and buy the book "Maximum boost" by corky bell and read the whole book.

Don't buy a SSautocrap turbo it will break within a few K miles.

ALLLLLL MOTOR!!!!! NA KA!!!! :D :D

you guys are going the wrong direction, make a U-turn and sell your turbos and boost controllers for Cams and headers!!!!!!!!!!! lol

lol, oh kiddo.......... im going to be 1000% honest with you. Turboing a car is nutz, takes a ton of money, time, maintence and up keep. So many things can go wrong and if you dont know what genrally goes wrong or dont know how to fix it you might find your self paying some money to have someone else fix it. personally i dont think its a good idea to throw a lot of power at someone who is learning how to drift, learning with less power will refine your techniques. But enough negitivity on the subject.

The first thing i did before i turboed my ka was a compression test. The compression test tells you how much pressure each cylinder produces. Due to extra wear or what ever else can go wrong you can get lower compression numbers which means your motor could be weak. The spec compression psi for a ka is 179psi. Some times people have more then that due to carbon buildup, and lots of times people have less because of high miles. Determine if your engine is in 'good' condition before you decide to put money into it trying to make it more powerful.

IAP sells a kit on nico for a certiain amount of money, greddy sells their kit for a certain amount of money. I have not looked into either of these, i built my own kit to what i though would be good.

do your self a favor and look at all the different avenues you can venture down as far as what you want to buy for turboing your ka. There are cheap alternatives that are more prone to failure and others that are more tried and true. Do look over every aspect of the turbo install and what is needed to be done. You may think you know everything, listen to what other people are having problems with and listen to how they solve their troubles.

it dose seem as if the ka-t deal is either hit or miss, take a little more time, figure out everything and more about it and make it a hit. :)

happy boosting.

I had enough power to hold my drifts with my single cam KA I can't make as much smoke as some but I don't have trouble getting sideways.

well said.... From my point of view I'm an SR person but I honestly have to say that a well thought out KA-T is prolly goin to be a happy one . If I were you I wouldn't go and slap a turbo on my everyday motor. buy a back one so you can build it correctly whether it may be stronger internals or new stock internals so this way you know that you have a durable motor and will prolly be less prone to problems just do some homework before you go to the test thats all .... and like 240sickness said fine tune your skills with a less powerful motor and then jump to a more powerful motor to shine. To tell you the truth i'm thinkin of goin towards a built KA-T rather then a built SR but w/e thats just me Good Luck with the project bro.....

naka bytches. cams, head work, itbs, fule management, header, and lightweight flywheel, clutch and tuning youll be revving like a bike. phill lets do that **** i just came accross a 95 ka ima build naka. oh and single cam pistons.

.....have you ever read wut a built ka makes all motor....lol
and rex, learn to drive please, dohc has more than enough power to get u going without going all twisty into a wal

i agree a twin cam is more than enough to start drifting,
me and m4fred have been drifting with twin cams for about a year now until he decided to "upgrade" to an sr but other than that we r doing prety good

I agree with manny and ali I would say to focus on the suspension system first and then get some more juice for the motor....

think about this maybe, if you turbo your car and you grenade it. What are you going to do?

put coilovers, adjustable tc rods, lots of tires and a diff in the car, you will have a drift car that you wont have to worry about it exploding. More reliable, more functional.

fyi, when im sliding with the turbo now, i have the power, but its harder to harness the power with out coilovers, and a diff. Suspension componets will help you become more consistant in my book.

plus 1........and please forget about boost for now...
