I want to get my car tuned but...

I don't know where to start.

I have a zenki with a redtop SR in it with a GT2871r, fmic, full exhaust, etc.
To get it tuned can I just take it to a shop and they can hook up the laptop and take it from there or do I have to get a piggyback/standalone for them to tune it? If I were to get a piggyback which would be the best choice?

I'd also like some suggestions on some good shops near my area (Miramar).
A friend told me about JG autoworks but I'd like some information on other shops.

This is my first car and my first post and any information is appreciated please dont be too harsh on me :)

Hey bro.

Looks like you're gonna get some nice numbers w/ that GT2871r. Are you still running stock MAF?

And any dyno/tuning shop you go to won't be able to just hook up their laptops to your stock ECU. You are correct in the sence that you DO need to get some sort of piggy back or even after market ECU. But w/ your setup, a piggy back would be ideal. You should only spend hundres (like 600+) on a complete standalone ecu if you're looking to push massive horsepower.

Any piggy back would work but personally, for your needs, i would go w/ an apexi afc-neo. And lucky you i'm selling mine which is literally brand new (it was just hooked up once for testing purposes). I'm selling it for 300 picked up. they run for about 350-400 brand new.

I live in miramar too (riviera isles, right off of miramar pkwy).

I got my KA-T setup done at JG, and know jorge (the owner of the shop) personally. He's a great guy, and he can get it tuned for you.

get a rom tune. piggy backs are a bandaid.

you can get a rom tune but you're gonna hafta send it back everytime you want your settings change (more fuel, more air, more boost, etc). It's gonna cost you too. I like the flexibility AFC's give you and the ability to tune yourself as long as you know what you're doing.

rom tune + bandaid = standalon w/crapmaf

The only way you have to chnge your rom tube is if you do a different maf or injectors. You can change the boost all you want and it's fine. A rom tuned ecu is a boost reading ecu. The only thing you can tune with and afc is how much detonation you want.

Agreed with the Afc part 100%, but the rom tuned ecu does Not read boost, it reads mass air flow and interpolates that data in a load point on the fuel/ignition maps. Now im not saying you cant change boost or nothing like that, you can, hell ive done it that way for years its just it will be "optimal" only at the boost it is tuned for (typically max boost you plan on running). The only time this is an exception is when your tuner, sits on the dyno for a few hours and fine tunes all the load points for different mass air flows, this however is not typical of mail order tunes, but like i said above it still can be safely done.

Having had a 2871r on sr20dets, i hope your not ln a stock maf or injectors for that matter, you will max them on a 2871 at only 8-9psi.

Very minimum you want a z32 mafs and 550cc injectors if you have a .64 back housing, if you have an.86 back housing id go with 740cc, i made on my .86 370whp at 19psi with just cams, with a greddy/freddy intake manifold you would easily hit 390/400whp.

If you go with nistune, i can tune it for you.

i would say get nistune, right now im using just an afc neo an trust me it sucks. i feel like i can make so much more if i had a better way of tuning like rom tune or so. so dont bother getting an afc alone.

to understand why the afc sucks you have to understand the way the fuel maps and igniton maps work. What the afc does is it takes the maf signal going into the ecu and alters it for the afm/ injectors you program into it (afc) then it sends a different signal inbto the ecu. The problem is that you have no way of knowing where this "new" signal will fall on the fuel or for that matter more impartantly the timing map. So you run into the situation where you might be running too little timing or way too much timing and then your motor goes byebye either very slowly or fairly quickly.

and the turbo. and probably a good idea w/ cams or cam tuning.

the maps are based off when the turbo hits full boost, anything that affects that to a high degree will make the tune less perfect.

but yeah, basically the only times you *need* to is maf, inj, and turbo.

flexibility w/ an SAFC is silly talk.

Thanks for all the replies :D

I bought the car swapped and the MAF is stock and I'm pretty sure the injectors are too.
I just started working and I'm going to start building up everything I need to get the car ready for tuning. (A/F gauge and MAF first and then maybe injectors/pump/FPR later on.)

You guys threw a whole mess of options at me and I'm not quite sure what to pick. So far the Nistune seems like the best choice.

I need some more information on that though, is it a seperate ECU or a piggyback? Would I need to take the car to a shop and have it dyno'd to get it tuned? I'm new to this I need some info :)

um you can NOT safely run a 2871 on stock fuel pump and injectors.

nistune is a re-calibrated ecu that allows it to be tuned via consult or usb cable.

I called up Moe and got some info. Now I'm paranoid that my engines gonna get screwed up because i have that turbo on there on stock everything else.. I have my manual boost controller closed all the way and the cars boosting like 6ish 7ish I hope its safe to drive to school and work and such this way.

Seriously now you guys are making me not want to drive the car :\
Is it safe to drive on only 7psi? Its my dd. My MBC doesn't go any lower :(
