Its not about the polys. Its all about texture mapping. If the textures look good then the poly count doesn't really matter that much.
I went to school for computer animation. If you need some help with modeling let me know. I had a demo reel with a s2k, crx, STi, evo, rx-7. I made them in a couple of days. If you want I can post some screenshots of them.

What would you be using the cars for. I used them on my demo reel for animation to graduate. If you need any help modeling let me know. I'll try and find a link for this site that has a bunch of car blueprints also.

add hard lines going across firewall for brakes and slave hardline. add crank angle sensor to sr. rad cap, down pipe and intercooler. I know your not done, just little ideas.
