News outlets are reporting that the EPA wants to start enforcing a proposed rule that would ban the transformation of road vehicles into race cars, essentially turning a stock 240SX into a drift bucket will be prohibited, which in some ways is a good thing. The EPA won't be going after vehicle owners though, instead they plan to hit the aftermarket parts manufacturers, especially those who sell equipment that tamper with emissions systems. Because it affects the aftermarket industry, SEMA is getting involved.
SEMA isn't just the name of a show (A surprise to many I bet), it represents all the companies who make those fancy parts to make your car go faster. So they're taking on the EPA to knock some sense into them and perhaps prevent them from making a huge mistake.
Why is the EPA raising a stink about race cars now? If you guessed that they're tired of destroying Skylines and are looking to destroy something else, you're wrong (Maybe). The official response is due to greenhouse gases and how we have to save the planet. I mean if that's the case, banning rotaries like they did in Le Mans should do the trick.
The EPA doesn't want to kill all race cars though. Vehicles intended for racing purposes only will be allowed. They just don't want you to get your FR-S, fix it by turbocharging it, and then use it as a daily driver. You can read more on the matter on the links below.
