my car is retarted please help..

when my car sits at idle, it sputters,in like a pattern like sequence..n then i would flick my lights on, n it wont sputter anymore..it idles fine with the lights on..then i turn em back off n it starts to sputter again..WTF :ugh:

alternator? sounds like a dumb problem

if its that dumb then im sure its easy to figure out...i had the alternator rebuilt like 2 days ago..it cant be the battery right? and also i took the compressor out..the belt went around that, the crankshaft pulley and the idler pulley..it has 3 belts though so that was just for the ac.wld that have anything to do with it?

gotta tell us what kind of car it is

have someone hook up a fluke meter to your alternator and battery and see what voltage there putting out. May also be a distributer issue as in its getting not enough or too much power causeing it retard the spark. whens the last time you had the timeing belt changed opr atlest inspected might want to do that do.

so u think it could be the timing? i nver looked at the timing belt..so u dont think its got anything to do with the compressor+ idler pulley?

if your saying that you just replaced your alt the other day and this is when the problem started, i would really take a look and make sure that your ground wire is grounded well... make sure that paint isnt inhibiting the ground. also i would take the car and have a load test done. the rebuild could have been bad you never know. gl

my frieind said it might be a an old belt..but other than that, its most likey the alternator or the grounding, or the timing then..

go to auto zone and tell them you would like someone to come outside and check your starting system, alternator and battery.

if you're nice, and they have enough stafff on duty to support it, somebody will wheel a goofy looking machine out to your car and check to make sure your alternator and battery are putting out enough voltage.

it's free, so don't be a dick about it.

take it to a mechanic..
the last time i let a mechanic touch my car, they claimed to have done a full tune up on it n it it turned out they really didnt so i had to do it myself n half the tools in my toolbox i had in my hatch just magicaly disapeared so NO fk a mechanic..but thanks n e ways

yea people get screwed over.
i still think you should take it to a mechanic, instead of just posting on here.
all you might find on here are good suggestions and different points of view.. but thats it. to really understand the problem with your car, you're going to need someone to actually look at it.

+1

Some people fuck you over, but doesn't mean you can't trust another company...

do your headlights have enough washer fluid in them?

LMAO :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

You should check that...

Unfortunately it could be a number of things causing rough idle It sounds like the engine might be confused about how much gas and air it is getting which might mean it needs a new oxygen sensor (EMISSION) or throttle position sensor. Start with the easy maintenance items like spark plug wires, air filter, and fuel filter if they have not been replaced recently. A bad spark plug wire may only occasionally short out and cause these problems. Try looking under the hood in the dark with the engine running and see if you see any electrical arcing around the spark plug wires or just go ahead and replace them if they are old. It might just be a clogged fuel line/injector/ or pump, try to put some fuel cleaner in tank the next time you fill it up and see if that helps. but I would also have to check out a couple more things such as the MAP sensor, and the o2 sensor. Check for vacuum leaks, also be sure to make sure the iac motor is not stuck out or has a loose spot. Get a Vacuum gauge and monitor the engine vacuum ...Also make sure that your O2 sensors, map sensor, coolant temp sensors are all functioning normallay.... try a fuel system clean (not the junk you buy at the auto parts store...have a shop perform a system clean.

hhmm..i wonder when u posted this as your telling me to do things WE ALREADY DID!it wasnt the ground wire, cuz it didnt do anything, it wasnt the vacum hose although im sure it helped n it wasnt the tps cuz it didnt make a difference too much..so now i kinda wana check the voltage..

isnt just easier to take it to a mechanic ? (i mean no jiffy lube, no firestone stuff ) just a mechanic (off course that gives a free quote) .. you will have less headaches.. coz it could be on the long run even the ECU ... :p good luck .. if you need a mech i know one!
