how do you tell the difference between a s14 cam s13 cam. the one in my car hass a bunch of grooves in it and the supposed s14 cam i got doesnt but the the numbers on the cam are the same. both say 3 and 53f

if u have two cams and cant tell which is which measure them(the lobes) with a micrometer(sp?), if they are different u will get different readings

i just measured the so called s14 cam at width wise the lobe measures 1.330 and from base to peak 1.665

ya thats it!
does it say any of then numbers on it?
i took the cams out of my s13 and i remember seeing the 240 and the 248 on the cams

nope all i see was those numbers posted in the beginning and 28 in orange paint.
and i found this on nicoclub.com. apparently measuring them would really do no good.
1) ’91-’93 240SX (S13) - Note: '94 exh specs are slightly different
intake cam = 240 deg duration with a 1.6699”-1.6774” lobe height
(intake opens 1 deg after TDC & closes 61 deg after BDC)
exhaust cam = 248 deg duration with a 1.6699”-1.6931” lobe height
(exhaust opens 64 deg before BDC & closes 4 deg after TDC)
2) '94 240SX (S13)
intake cam = 240 deg duration with a 1.6699”-1.6774” lobe height
(intake opens 1 deg after TDC & closes 61 deg after BDC)
exhaust cam = 248 deg duration with a 1.6699”-1.6931” lobe height
(exhaust opens 60 deg before BDC & closes 8 deg after TDC)
3) ’95-’98 240SX (S14)
intake cam = 232 deg duration with a 1.6699”-1.6774” lobe height
(intake opens 1 deg after TDC & closes 53 deg after BDC)
exhaust cam = 232 deg duration with a 1.6699”-1.6774” lobe height
(exhaust opens 48 deg before BDC & closes 4 deg after TDC)

i know i might be wasting my time but it would be a good learning experience. i only wanted this swap too give a lil more pull in the low and mid range. the cam i have in now doesnt pull hard till 5.5k

53F is a casting number, I have s13 and s14 heads with the 53F cast stamp on them. The duration will not be listed on the camshaft, you would need a degree wheel and a dial gauge setup accurately to determine duration. I dont think there are any physical attributes that would identify an s13 vs s14 cam other then if you know you pulled it out of this car or you purchased the cam shaft from Nissan. You can identify whether its an intake or exhaust cam shaft by looking at the relationship in between the cam sprocket and the lobes on cylinder 1.

thanks very useful. ima try and put this cam on tuesday. i would of had it on last night but the cam bolt is on really tight. I used everything i had breaker bar, cheater bar and it wouldnt break lose. so ima use an impact on tuesday and hopefully have it all done.
