Engine Go Boom: Haltech Find Limit Of VR38DETT's Stock Internals

It was only a matter of time before it happened, but it seems that an Australian workshop has managed to take the engine of their R35 GT-R right to the raggedy edge - and beyond.

Yep, somebody's managed to destroy Godzilla's plasma-lined heart in the pursuit of ultimate power. The car, which was being used by ECU firm Haltech to conduct some fairly exhaustive R&D, suffered a catastrophic engine failure at Eastern Creek Raceway near Sydney at the end of last month, and it's only now that a complete teardown of the VR38DETT has revealed what went wrong deep inside the R35's engine bay.

It appears that the culprits were the number 1 and number 3 pistons, which split horizontally at the wrist pin and sent the crown up into the valves and the skirt down into the depths of the crankcase. The number one and three conrods, no longer being confined by the pistons at the small end, then proceeded to smash their way through the remainder of the engine, destroying the block, oil pump, sump and the plasma-lined cylinder bores. Needless to say, Haltech's VR38 is now one hell of a paperweight.

GT-R owners need not be worried just yet, as Haltech's spectacular engine failure doesn't necessarily mean there's anything inherently wrong with Nissan's new wunder-car. Haltech's GT-R was reportedly cranking out a massive 400kW at the wheels when the engine, for want of a better phrase, shat itself. That's a huge increase over stock, and big power by any measure. In fact, it's practically miraculous the standard cast pistons lasted that long in the first place, given the extreme testing Haltech inflicted upon them.

The story doesn't end here though. Haltech are in the process of shipping over a brand-new block with Darton sleeves, while proper forged pistons and stronger conrods will also be specced for their new motor. Given all their previous experiments were run on a stock motor with stock ancillaries, it'll be interesting to see how much power they manage to extract with the stronger aftermarket goodies whirling away within the bowels of their GT-R. We wish them luck.

Thanks for the tip, Dan!

You serious bro?

Back on topic, that seems weak. Stock horsepower is like 400 something and it couldnt even handle another 50 something horsepower?

So haltech blows ONE recorded engine that the gtr has lost, it automatically makes it a pos engine? yea it might have bearly had more power then stock but you dont know what the tune was. Give me a break you guys are totally bashing this car for the stupiest reasons, if anyone pays as much attention to any other "super car" same amoutn of problem will arise, not to mention this is the gtr's first year in production.
So lets see the gtr has "bad" transmissions, well if you treat ANY AWD transmission as a fucking drag car it WILL fuck it up! Nissan didnt build the transmission for retarded drag racing.ONE recorded blown engine by a TUNING company, hmm not bad.

So easy fix of the transmission, make a 7 speed manual transmission, to keep all of these "against" fan boys from nit picking at EVERY little tiny thing that they read about the gtr on the internet.

Sorry until another jap manufactor can beat this car, GTR>any other jap sports car made TODAY.

well if i paid that much for a GTR and the god damn tranny blows and it cost 20,000 for a new tranny id be pissed. I think its a ugly P.O.S. Every fanboy including you is jokin it just cause its a gtr but if you look at nothing says gtr but the badge on the back. It should of had a RB in it and it should only come with a manual tranny. Plus its the ugliest "super car" ever made. Plus putting shit in the car like launch control that once you use it bam voided warranty. Shits just stupid. :bigthumbu

RB's are not that great. I'd take a 1/2j over an RB any day.

There are already guys making well over 600 on VR's though, stock engine and stock turbos. So Haltech blew one. Its a new car, seriously this kind of thing happens all the time especially when tuners get their hands on one.
