Hey dudes, what's up. Here's the deal, I have no idea what the previous owner did to to my 91 Nissan 240SX, but there seems to be a problem with the brake lights. You see, when the headlight swith is turned to the "off" position, all the lights are off, as they should be, but when I hit the brakes, the tailights don't come on. At all. Now, when I turn the headlight swith to the first "on" position or "parking lamps". All the rear tailights come on. As if I'm stepping on the brake pedal. And when I step on the brake pedal, guess what? Nothing happens. So either my tailights are turned off, or they're fully turned on as if I'm pressing the brakes.

Now, I have a friend that has an S13 coupe parts car. I have no idea what the problem is on my car, so I was thinking about swapping floor harnesses with the coupe. Should I do this? Is there a better solution? Does anyone know what the problem is? Please help. Here's a couple of pics I took to help with this problem:

Lights OFF. Ok, everything good:

First ON position (Parking lamps). Everything good in the front:

BUT CHECK OUT THE BACK, NOONE IS STEPPING ON THE BRAKES:mad:

Headlights ON:

CHECK OUT THE BACK AGAIN, NOONE IS HITTING THE BRAKES:confused:

Please help me :( .
Thanks in advance.

make sure the correct bulb is installed in the bulb sockets for parking and parking & brake spots

the parking & brake bulb are suppose to be double filment with two contact spots

and the parking bulb is a single filment with one contact spot

try taking your tailight bulbs out and put them in the parts car sockets and see if it does the samething! if that doesn't solve your problems i can give you a million other ways to solve this problem

Ok. I checked all the fuses and replaced the ones that were bad and the ones that were missing. I switched out all the bulbs. And all of them are correct. Double fillament in the tailights and single fillament on the front turn signals. Front turn signals are JDM so they have the stupid little clear light next to the amber turn signal. But those work fine.

grounding grounding grounding.

Yes! That's what I was looking for. But I don't know where to look. I was thinking it was a ground problem but I don't know where to look within the harness to see what's missing or what's cut out?

get factory service manual. they have wiring diagrams of the whole car. Start sorting your way through the chasis harness.

stoplight switch
2nd person that's told me that.

I just dowloaded the FSM and printed out the Main Harness diagram. I'm gonna check all the body grounds tommorrow and see if anyone is disconnected or something.

Thanks for the help everyone. :bigthumbu

maybe your rubber garment on the back of your brake pedal is fubarred check that biznatch y0!

happens to ALL 240s

i hated it.. shit killed my battery

All right. No progression whatsoever. Here's what I did today.
1. Checked all the body grounds of the main harness. There's 3 in the body, 1 under the carpet and 1 behind the dash. I checked them all, and they were all securely bolted down to the body with no corrosion.
2. Checked the stoplight switch. Seems fine, gets pressed in when the brake pedal is DePressed, and releases when the brake pedal is pressed.
3. Disconnected the plug and "JUMPED" the wires by using a paper clip on the plug, and still nothing.
4. So then, I started inspecting the back of the tailights. Followed all the wires with the FSM diagram and they were all in place with no loose wires sticking out of the plugs or mystery wires hanging loose.

So now, I'm back at square ONE. The problem still persists and still nothing is going on.

Now, I did reach one assumption. I disconnected the Stoplight Switch, according to me, the stoplight switch sends the signal to the second fillament of the bulbs, making them brighter when you hit the brakes. If the stoplight switch is disconnected, then WHY ARE THE BRAKE LIGHTS COMING ON????
