Wtf headlights confusing the hell out of me

Alright well when I first bought this car from Dan the headlights never worked. He said he replaced everything except the switch on the steering column and thas why they never opened or retracted. So today I went and got a new switch finally from a working car and put it in.

After installing it both lights went down. THen I turned the headlights on and only the passenger side went up. I then went around to the front and disconnected the passenger side headlight motor thing and pressed the button. The driver side did not want to go up or move. I then plugged the passenger side back in and it did not want to move. So i disconnected the driver side and the passenger side started moving again. I then put driver side back in and pressed the button. The passenger side didnt want to move but I heard a click coming from the driver side. I then plugged everything back in and manually put both sides up. I got the passenger side up and as I was about 1/4 the way up on the driver side, both sides went down. I did this again and yet again both sides went down. I then unplugged both and manually put them back up. What the hell is going on?
 
so the driver's side doesn't work and the passenger side is intermittent?

how does the harness look under the driver side fender? part of this harness starts from the steering column switches before joining the fuse box under the dash and then circling the engine bay through both fuse boxes.

if your really desperate you can pull your head light assemblies out and plug them into a friend's car to verify that the driver's side actually works at all and that the passenger side works properly, you can actually finagle these things off the radiator support without removing anything else.
 
ok when u try to move the headlights up manually and the motors push them back down, thats because they are still getting signal to move down, maybe the button on the left side of the dash is fucked.

try to take out the relay in the box next to the airfilter thats labeled H/L RET DOWN. then see if the headlights go up.
