Dan I have seen this link. trust me I searched a lot before I even thought of making this thread. right now I have a j30 diff and its shot. so I really want to avoid another vlsd. I would rather put a Helical lsd inside, wither s15,obx or quaiffe. I just need confirmation.
(a) If I get another s14 stock diff. can I just use the ring and pinion gear from a q45 and then throw in a s15 or obx lsd?
(b) it turns out that the q45 diff will fit an s14 but needs a z32 TT driver axle and q45 pass axle. if I get this unit will I be able to install an s15 or obx lsd?
Or better yet are there any known aftermarket Helical lsd's available for the q45?
It would seem the easiest solution Would be to just run the Whole q45 pumpkin but I still need the address the lsd issue.
Early Q45 diffs are R200 cases and they come with a VLSD but the output shafts are larger and have a different bolt pattern as stated above. You can run the Z32 TT drivers axle on the drivers side and the Q45 axle on the passenger if you run the z32 TT 5 lug hubs.
The Q45 Ring and Pinion gear will work with either the Q45 VLSD or the s15 helical diff because the Ring gear is threaded for a larger 13mm bolt where as the J30 and 240sx ring gears are threaded for a 12mm bolt.
If you want to run an s15 helical or q45 diff with shorter gearing from a 240 or j30. You have to get special bolts that have a 13 mm shoulder with 12 mm threads. They cost like 100$. Or you can have some bushing made.
The Q45 diff casing itself bolts into an s14 no problem. It is actually the same casting as a J30 diff.
I suppose if you wanted to run the Q45 ring gear on the J30 vlsd there is no reason why you cant drill the holes larger to fit the larger ring gear bolts.
