after swapping a new non-ghetto harness into phil's old hatch (ka(oh yeah the old one melted away last week lol)), the starter is spinning, not engaging, and the car is not cranking, but has full power. help please, this car is in the ter-tech event with me and the vert...peace

bad solenoid, its the little part of the starter were everything connects for people who dont know all it does is move the gears forward to engauge with the flywheel if that goes bad starter will just spin :bigthumbu

the starter solenoid is the electrical device that trigger the starter. If the starter is running when you turn the key to the start position but it is not catching the flywheel most likely its because the bendix drive is stuck. The bendix drive is that little gear that flys out and catches on the flywheel to turn the engine over.

The engine started fine before right? and all of the sudden now it dosent want to start?

replace starter.

i use to rebuild starters and alternators the solenoid can go bad and keep it from engauging resulting in the stator and gear to spin but preventing the gear from coming out and enguaging the flywheel either way unless you know how to rebuild it your gonna have to replace it :bigthumbu

the solenoid is pretty much an electromagnet that pushes a cylinder thats conected to a plastic arm thats conected to the gear and pushes it forward pretty much a sesaw effect :bigthumbu

we'll we swapped starters, same shit! spinning, no engaging. i do not think it is a mechanical stater issue now. somewhere else something ignition related got fried...thanks guys

you sure its conected right??? the conections to a starter is simple just 2 wires honestly theres nothing electrical that can cause it to just spin and not engauge listen for a clank noise when u start it to make sure its engauging when u try and start it ...did u check the teath on the flywheel b 4 installin it maybe there broken?? :bigthumbu

make sure everything on the new harness is wired TIGHT and all connections are good

opull out the starter and use a battery to test it, some alligator clanps and some wires, test it and see if it works outside the cars means you are doing something wrong, or maybe the battery cable going to starter is bad, or the Key control switch circuit might be bad.

thanks again guys...still checking it all out. but on a more positive note, the main hoop to my roll bar/rear cage on my vert (for ter tech) seems to be coming together quite nicely. thnaks ranlet! seeya tonite
