As a proud SEMA Member we have to help them out when lawmakers try and do silly things. We were notified today that the state of Oregon is trying to ban the sale of aftermarket automotive parts. This is not only insane but would put a huge hurt to the local Drifting scene which is dear to our hearts. The deal especially effects Drifting because most of the bill is related to tires. The bill is primarily focused on aftermarket tires and would authorize the Environmental Quality Commission to implement enforcement regulations, likely based on a rolling resistance calculation.
At the request of Governor Theodore Kulongoski, the Oregon Speaker of the House has introduced legislation (H.B. 2186) to prohibit the sale and distribution of aftermarket motor vehicle parts if alternatives are available that “decrease greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles.” Here are some notes from SEMA Action Network.
We Urge You to Contact Oregon Speaker of the House Dave Hunt and Members of the Environment and Water Committee (Contact Information Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to H.B. 2186
  • H.B. 2186 would regulate vehicle fuel economy, an authority reserved to the federal government.
  • H.B. 2186 could ban tires that may have improved performance, handling or appearance features, based solely on a rolling resistance rating.  In addition, this program could easily distract consumers from focusing on more important safety issues such as tire inflation and overloading of vehicles.
  • H.B. 2186 would force consumers to purchase only original equipment manufacturer (OEM) tires because the program essentially exempts OEM-selected tires and unfairly implies that they are superior to aftermarket products.
  • H.B. 2186 could prohibit aftermarket parts designed to either personalize or optimize specific vehicle performance attributes including handling, towing, suspension, fuel economy, etc.
  • H.B. 2186 provides broad authority to government regulators and could limit a range of aftermarket parts currently available to consumers based on the subjective determination of government regulators.
DON’T DELAY!  Please contact Oregon Speaker Dave Hunt and the House Environment and Water Committee immediately to urge his opposition to H.B. 2186.

^ it could start a trend if other states like the idea/results if it goes through.

Exactly. I don't think that bill will pass. Thats like saying that no type of motorsports participate in the state of Oregon! So they dont want them to be sold in their state but Im sure they enjoy NASCAR a LOT!!

fuck oregon its a state of fail

Do you know OR?

I'm really familiar with the state and believe it or not, the NorthWest actually has a really active and progressive drifting scene. That's actually where I started drifting. It sucks that this bill is trying get passed, if it did it would totally cripple what progress it has made in terms of legal venues for events. I remember the very first drift day in OR (which was also my first drift event ever) and it has come a loooooooong way since. I've seen the scene up there in the Northwest, the Midwest, Cali and now here and quite frankly I think it can compete with the best of them.

I'm only posting this because I know that area and just trying to bring some insight to those who may not know what it's like up there...

Oregon is awesome, but that is retarded. Fucking hippies.

it wont pass cause the unemployment rate in Oregon still climbing and they r working hard to slow it down. by passing this bill hundrets of americans will loose they're jobs.
however the number of street racers (ricers) is high and accidents continue to happen due to this, it is sad but true.

Dude, Oregonians are really really really uptight about their enviroment. I can understand them wanting to control emissions and all that...wait...they do, yearly inspections. They are going to spend/waste time, money, and energy on this crap...when they already have a system in place.

Fail.
