Drift Sessions held their second drift event of the year this past Sunday with roughly 30 drivers sliding to be America's Next Top Drifter. In order to claim the title, one had to knock down the human cone running around with a camera in the middle of the track. In the end the human cone went home happy while everyone else went home sad because no one could knock him down to claim the prize.
A competition wouldn't be one without incidents as Bert Abalos' Toyota Corolla traded paint with Jerry Warren's Toyota Supra causing damage to the Corolla for the first time this century. The incident didn't seem to phase Bert as he continued to slide his Corolla for the rest of the day. Often times sliding with Jerry again, but with more distance between them. For Jerry I would imagine he didn't even realize Bert made contact with him considering his Supra is built like a tank. I don't think anyone was able to see the damage Bert left behind.
Making his return through a cloud of smoke, Estie Falero arrived out of no where with his D1-approved 240SX. Some say he got tired of the gun show he was attending and decided to stop by to see what was going on. Falero teamed up with Juan Henao to double their chances at knocking the human cone down. But in their attempts to do so, it caused them to create one of the greatest uncoordinated tandems so far this year. Or maybe Estie was using Juan as target practice while Juan was busy trying to dodge his bullets. Who knows.
"I Am Sam" brought out his RX-7 to slide for the first time this millennium. Yes Sam with the super white FC RX-7 pictured above for proof. Honestly, I was mostly surprised the car even made it there (I've heard stories). Now for those of you who were out there and saw him slide, don't be so hard on him. 1. This was his first event in 5 years. 2. It's a rotary. 3. He didn't realize the extent of how bad his front tires were until he let others drive his car. The vehicle was a self-esteem killer. But the good thing is that Sam didn't care as he took it as a chance to learn more about his car and work on making changes for the next event he plans to attend. One personal request, do something about the steering. My arms are killing me as I type this.
After a grueling 5 hours of drifting, there was no winners (Ha! Ha!...Fail!), but everyone was looking forward to the next event. There were a few more surprises like tamago sliding his stock MR2 Spyder, Alex's ViciouslyQueer-powered Corolla, and Jerry (gsracer) teaching others how to drive a truck properly. So far it's looking to be a better year than last as more drivers come out to be America's Next Top Drifter. Let's just hope the momentum continues. For those of you that drove, make sure to keep an eye out for photos, videos, and some driver interviews captured at this event. Until next time, keep it real.
