hey i know the diffrence in a LSD and a welded differential. but what am not sure is which one is better? which one is better for drifting? and is there anything i should know about them? thanks am a noob, new 2 game.

if you got like 800-1000 to drop on a 2way do it if not then get a welded they both work fine. welded sucks for daily cause you draw alot of attention with it but it works and its $50 vs $800-1000 new

tight turns in parking lots are going to squeak the outside tire and so on... its going to get looks

he means that ur wheel will"skip/cherp" while making a turn like say out of a gas station and a 2/1.5 way lsd wont unless under pressure...

weldeds also are cheap in to ways. 1. Getting ur diff welded can be from 50-150(depends on who does it) 2. u dnt have to change the diff oil( like after 2-3 events including daily driving miles) or every motor oil change.

LSD= oil change often!!! specially if u want to preserve the integrity of the part.(longer life) i have a lsd on my z and it doesnt see much track time, and i change the diff oil every other motor oil change. (more is always better)

Weldeds = 100% lock under accel & decel(obviously)

1.5 way is locked under accel and not on decel

2 way is same as welded lock on decel and accel but isnt locked all the time.(meaning unless ur driving the car u wont be locking, but thats where the "clunk or chatter" comes in, where the locking discs r slipping creating the "noise".

I cnt explain the mechanics, nor want to...so google 2 way differential and wiki will hold all knowledge for u! GL

EDIT: 2-Way/Welded/VLSD

Ok thank for that info.. well i dont have the cash for a 2-way (i could buy another car with that) so welded is the cheaper choice. As for dd i should just drive nice and easy and take my time around corners. Lol i kinda feel like a jacked this guys thread a bit srry OP

I would suggest riding in or driving a car with a welded diff. A lot of people just say welded is no big deal, but they are the true enthusiasts with not a lot of money and willing to sacrifice comfort for performance. Since you claim to be a newb better to try it before you get it welded and are stuck with it. You can find open Diff's all day so you could buy another if you did weld and not like it, just figure you should try it before you take the plunge. It's great for drifting or dragging in a straight line, but any type of normal/street driving it can be annoying. I'm broke as can be, but i saved up for a Tomei 2-way lsd and it was/is worth every penny. :bigthumbu

dudes the guys main question was if they drift the same not whats the difference is. he did state that. also my question is how bout VLSD are they the same as LSD'S. i have heard you can't do donuts in VLSD but am not sure?

VLSD SUCKS BALL NUFF SAID

real men rock welded:bigthumbu

not that this matters but i just wanted to say that a 1.5 does lock on both accel and decel but lockup on decel is less pronounced. thats why its a 1.5 and not a 1 way.

A VLSD is not locked at all times. Does not lock on decel. When you drift your entrys would be less pronounced and your exits would be more controllable, but would have less angle. With a welded you would have full lock, all the time. More pronounced entrys, more angle, also a tad more to handle if you dont have any throttle control cause it's easier to oversteer. This is a simple breakdown though, we could talk about this for hours and still get no where. Me personally I love VLSD. I wouldn't rock one if I had 300 hp and coilovers and all but for a mild 240 thats daily driven, VLSD cant be beat.

Welded ftw. Its not as bad as some people make it out to be. Only thing that sucks is you will hear a little noise until you get used to it and it goes away lol. But welded is awesome for the average drifter, nice price, and if its done right it will last a long time.

it'd be nice if there was an automatic lock for making threads with the keywords "welded vs vlsd." no offense to op.

Ummm just wondering how a diff is going to change how much angle you have in a turn??? The diff is in the back of the car right? Like not connected to the steering or throttle?

not to mention vlsd is like a box of chocolates.... you never know what you'll get when drifting. it may lock, it might not, it might be delayed, it might just melt in your mouth.

technically if you have both wheels spinning you can 'maintain' a better angle/increase it with proper power since your dead wheel isnt draggin you down. but you can still enter with full lock with any diff like Jlo said.
