compression check

Rent the tool, remove all the sparkplugs and in the engine bay the fuse for the gas pump. Insert the tool in one of the sparkplug holes and crank the car 3 to 4 times. Check the number and look to see if the needle is going down or staying at the same place. This lets you know if there's a leak. Ideally you should be above 150 to 160 compression, the stock was like 180 to 190 but don't quote me on that.

normal compression testers will have a one way check valve so it will hold the reading until the relief valve is depressed
after a few cranks it will hold the highest reading. i think what you are referring to is a leak down test where pressurized air is feed into the cylinder and the rate at which it drops tells you how bad the leak is.
